Sept 4, 1957, nine African American students arrived at Central High School but were not allowed to enter the all white school. They were fighting for equal opportunity in education and challenged the segregation rules prevalent at that time. There is a wonderful monument on the capitol grounds on the north side next to the Liberty bell and the fountain.

The nation watched the Little Rock Nine story unfold as nine black students attempted to enter the previously all-white school. With the help of students and activists, Little Rock eliminated separate systems of education for blacks and whites. Visit the historic center for incredible historic footage and information.
