Also known as the Bibliotheca it was founded in 1776 by Grand Master Emmanuel de Rohan-Polduc as a reference library. It has been the legal deposit library since 1925 and has the largest collection of Melitensia along with that of the University of Malta. The library also contains archives of the Order of St John, the University of Mdina and the University of Valletta. The Bibliotheca is housed in a late 18th century neoclassical building close to the Grand Masters Palace.
