세계에서 가장 큰 금당과 본존 빨간 망토를 쓴 핀도라 사슴 보호 구역 옛 수도의 터가 고스란히 남아있는 나라. 특히 불교가 왕성하게 번영하던 시기였기에 곳곳에 사찰이 많이 남아 있는데, 그 중에서도 도다이지가 가장 으뜸으로 손꼽히는 명소이다. 한국인에게는 동대사로도 잘 알려져 있다. 세계문화유산으로 지정된 도다이지는 세계에서 가장 거대한 규모의 대불전을 갖고 있는데, 지금의 모습은 1709년에 재건된 모습으로 본래의 2/3 크기라고 한다. 거대한 대불상의 높이는 16미터, 437톤의 청동과 130kg의 금으로 만들어졌다. 대부분 17시를 기점으로 문을 닫으니 너무 늦게 방문하지 말 것.

Make the trip to Nara if only to go to this temple. The temple itself is the largest wooden building in the world and houses the largest bronze buddha in the world. Plus, a visit here allows you to enjoy the 1200 or so deer that roam near the temple. A real treat!
