Le Marche has no less than 18 towns and villages that have been conferred with the orange flag, proclaiming them to be the most beautiful villages in Italy. My favourites were Montelupone and Grottamare, both within driving distance from Ancona. In fact you don’t even have to choose between them; both the towns can be visited on a day trip from Ancona or Urbino. Montelupone is an ancient walled town, which has a medieval church and palace to its credit. However, the real charm of the place is in just wandering about its tiny alleys, admiring the pretty houses and catching a glimpse of the Le Marche countryside from various lookout points. In its historic centre stands the Palace of the Podestà, with a tall tower crowned with a battlement. The tower also displays the town’s coat of arms and the town clock.
