To survive in a hot and arid environment the native Hawaiians (kanaka maoli) used ancient fishing skills, including the building of fishponds, and the knowledge of the location of precious fresh water (wai) that flows into the many brackish pools throughout the park. Enjoyable historic hike. About 12 minutes north. Beach there often has sea turtles to view.

National park with historic significance. Close to Honokohau Harbor is a beach where you can often see honu (green sea turtles) close to shore. Maybe you will catch a glimpse of Laverne, the local tiger shark who swims around the harbor.
