The old railway line between Whitby and Scarborough closed in 1965, after 80 years of service, but the 21-mile-long track is still there, providing a wonderful off-road route for cyclists and walkers right along the finest part of the North Yorkshire coast. It's known locally as the 'Cinder Track' (after the original surface laid down for the railway line), and has all sorts of quirks and highlights, from a tea-room fashioned from the former station at Cloughton to clifftop side-routes down into hidden bays like Hayburn Wyke.

Wonderful track for walking and bikes. Uses old railway line. For a short walk walk from Whitby and head over the Larpool viaduct, superb views.

Fabulous path for cycling and walking on the old trackbed between Whitby and Scarborough. The Whitby end has recently been resurfaced and is great, it's a bit rougher between there and the resurfaced section toward Robin Hoods Bay so can get muddy but easily accessible for everyone and pretty level walking. It's very well used by cyclists, walkers, dog, buggies, kids etc but gets quieter the further from Whitby you get. Access from Southend Gardens near Beevers furniture shop. Comes out on Mount Pleasant North in RHB and can be easily combined with the Cleveland way on any section, between Whitby and RHB, RHB and Ravenscar and Ravenscar and Scarborough. The surface is not so good past RHB but fine for walking and mountain bikes.

The former coastal railway, it's a gentler alternative to the clifftop Cleveland Way. Runs between Whitby & Scarborough via Robin Hood's Bay, Ravenscar & Hayburn Wyke. Great for cyclists & walkers
