Murter has been known since the 13th century. when it was called Veliko Selo and Srimač (Srimac), and since 1715 it has had its current name. For a long time, it was thought that his name had something to do with death, but Murter most likely got his name from the hollowed-out stone trough that was part of the oil press, and it was called - mortarium. This origin of the name also points to the long tradition of olive growing in this region. Murter oil is widely known.
