Great hiking, sightseeing, lake fishing, etc. Choose almost any trail and you will be rewarded with amazing views of Mt. Hood and other mountains. Favorites are Veda Lake trail (bring some light fishing tackle to catch some small but very vibrant cutthroat trout) and Mirror Lake.

Mount Hood National Forest is in Oregon, east of Portland and south of the Columbia River Gorge. Mount Hood, a dormant volcano capped by glaciers, is home to ski trails, alpine lakes and the 1930s Timberline Lodge. The Timberline Trail encircles the peak, passing waterfalls, glacial creeks and meadows. Barlow Road, once part of the Oregon Trail, goes around the southern slope near the village of Government Camp.

The main attractions of Mount Hood National Forest, including the Timberline Lodge and the Mount Hood Cultural Center, can be reached from downtown Portland by car in less than 90 minutes. Some of the hiking trails and other areas are a little farther.

Located twenty miles east of the city of Portland, Oregon and the northern Willamette River valley, the Mt. Hood National Forest extends south from the strikingly beautiful Columbia River Gorge across more than sixty miles of forested mountains, lakes and streams to Olallie Scenic Area, a high lake basin under the slopes of Mt. Jefferson
