One of the most visited towns in Antioquia is Guatapé. Located 75 kilometers from Medellin in the east of the Department, it has a story to tell. In 1970, Guatapé faced a crossroads, when it was announced that part of the municipality should be flooded to build the hydroelectric complex of the Public Companies of Medellín, a dam of energy importance for Colombia. The proximity to the reservoir gives visitors the possibility of practicing water sports, while the forest vegetation that surrounds the town allows activities such as hiking. One of the most important tourist attractions to visit is El Peñón de Guatapé, also known as "La piedra del Peñol". It is a 220-meter-high monolith located between the towns of Guatapé and El Peñol, which has 702 steps to the top. Despite the difficulties involved in relocating the town, this population of just over eight thousand inhabitants has known how to be reborn, making this place one of the most desired for its cobbled streets and hand-painted baseboards.

Guatape is a little town located in the Antioquia department in Colombia. It is known as one of the most colorful and beautiful towns in the country. Enjoy helicopter rides, jet-skiing, nice restaurants, and much more.

You'd be mad to come to Medellin and not at least take a day trip to Guatape, Colombia's most colourful town. Discover the colourful zocalos, climb El Peñol, eat fresh trout by the lake and take a peek at local life. And whilst we're all for convincing people to spend a few days here, it's completely doable in one day if you start off early enough. What you need to decide however is if you want to do it yourself or take a tour. The Tour | This all day tour costs $35 USD and includes transport, lunch, a guided tour of Guatape and the chance to climb Piedra del Peñol, as well as some free time to explore on your own. Independently | Buses leave Medellin very regularly from Terminal del Norte, take 1.5 to 2 hours and cost around 13,500 COP. They return as frequently, making a day trip here relatively simple.
