Meiji-era Machiya with Tea Rooms & Garden Stay

This Meiji-era Kyo-machiya in Nishijin, Kyoto is a two-story townhouse with a tiled gabled roof preserving details of its time. The first floor has two tea rooms once used as a retreat, while upstairs offers a tatami room with alcove and adjoining space. Designated by Kyoto City as a Historic Scenic Landscape Building, it reflects craftsmanship, commerce, and hospitality. Beyond a narrow alley lies a quiet garden and tea room. Renovated, it blends tradition and modern comfort for a unique stay.

Traditional Kyo-Machiya type inn near Kinkakuji

My place has been a century-old traditional inn and recently renovated into a spacious Kyo-Machiya style inn named "KINKAKU-RO", where you can feel both traditional and modern sense, officially licensed by the local government. It is located at a quiet residential area in the north part of Kyoto within a walking distance from the famous tourist attractions such as Kinkaku-ji (Golden Pavilion) and Kitano Temmangu. Five free rental bicycles allow you to have an easy access to other nice spots.

Year by year, these kinds of traditional houses are decreasing even in Kyoto.That is why I decided to renovate this Japanese traditional house as guest house as I hope to preserve. Machiya( town house) has several types according to its use. My Machiya was built for weavers, both as residence and as atelier.
