Buchan Caves Reserve
Buchan Caves Reserve is a beautiful park for picnicing with a lot of shady trees and a playground. The kiosk is great for snacks and souveniresThe famous caves are well worth takinga tour or maybe a bush walk is more your scene.
One of our favourite drives is a trip to Nunniong Plains which is a high country plain where it snows in the winter. Wild brumbies can be seen at all times of the year. A number of activities can be enjoyed in the Nunniong State Forest. These include fishing in the headwaters of the Tambo and Timbarra Rivers, four wheel driving, bush walking, horse riding, photography and flora and fauna appreciation.
Bentley Plain is a highlight of the drive, where you can picnic or camp at either “Moscow Villa” or the “Bush Hilton”, providing a base for the various activities. For a longer adventure you can continue on to Bindii near Swifts Creek where you can visit the Nullamunje Olive Farm restaurant for lunch in warmer weather.

We highly recommend a Steak Sandwich, Souvlaki or Buchan Burger from the Buchan Roadhouse. Owners Jane and Scott breed their own beef and lamb which they use in their delicious take way menu. They also sell fresh packed meat to the public if you need to restock.

Buchan Caves Hotel became famous when it burnt down three years ago. The iconic pub was an important social gathering place for locals and tourists alike and was sorely missed. It inspired one of Australia's biggest and most successful crowdfunding campaigns, which brought in $600,000 to help build a new Hotel. The large modern hotel has kept a lot of the character of the old version. It is a very pleasant place to have a beer or two.

City/town information
We are about an hour from the Gippsland Lakes and the beautiful Ninety Mile beach so this is a great option for day trips if staying for more than just a weekend. Lakes Entrance is a popular tourist destination so it offers heaps to do including swimming in the surf, boating, boat trips, paddle boats, mini golf, golf course, lots of cafes and restaurants and so much more. It will also be a chance to stock up at the supermarket.
If the hustle and bustle of Lakes Entrance sounds a bit too much try Lake Tyers Beach which is a sleepy little town not far from Lakes. Lunch at the Tavern and take a walk on the beach.
