Santa Monica has it all. First stop - the Santa Monica Pier. Enjoy the rides in the amusement park on the pier called Pacific Park. And take a picture under the sign at the official end of Route 66. Enjoy entertainment from street performers and enjoy watching the sunset from the bleachers at the end of the pier as the sun sinks into the Pacific at the end of the day.
After sunset, walk up Colorado 3 blocks to the shopping mall and the Third Street Promenade where you will find stores, restaurants, a movie theater and night life. And you can always find parking in the parking structures all along 2nd and 4th streets. The first 90 minutes are free!
