The Larnaca Salt Lake complex was declared a protected area & is the haunt of over 85 species of water-birds which use the lake as an important migratory passage through Cyprus. The Lake offers visitors a picturesque beautiful backdrop for stunning photos & is especially famous for its winter flamingoes that use the lake as their breeding ground. During the winter months the lake fills with water but in the summer the water evaporates leaving a crust of salt which was at one time one of the island's major exports.
