Parks & Nature
The Forts walk is one of the iconic walks on Magnetic Island. It's your best chance to see koalas in the wild, and it offers you WWII history combined with stunning views of Horseshoe Bay and Cleveland Bay. You'll need to hop on a bus, hire a car or drive your way to The Forts, but it's a not-to-be-missed destination on Maggie.

The Forts
The Forts walk is one of the iconic walks on Magnetic Island. You'll need to hop on a bus, hire a car or drive your way to The Forts, but it's a not-to-be-missed destination on Maggie.
Just over the Picnic Bay hill, and on the other side of Base Backpackers you'll find the Nelly Bay Snorkel trail. Hire your gear and grab a swim card, and learn about giant clams and the local coral and fish. (Another, quite different, snorkel trail is also in Geoffrey Bay).

Food Scene
Mamma Roma and The Reef Bar are right next door. With live music outdoors most weekends, their BYO licence means you can put the cooking on hold and sit back and enjoy the Picnic Bay foreshore at your leisure. (Bookings recommended).
The Picnic Bay Hotel is also just a short walk. It also offers the R&R Restaurant and Bar as another way to stay out of the kitchen. All have great views across the jetty with the lights of Townsville in the distance.
Horseshoe Bay on the opposite side of the island also has a range of restaurants, take aways and pubs. Hop on the bus and enjoy the ride.

Shipwrecks surround the island, so they also have information on these if you're interested. There is a small shop and a separate building full of information.
Magnetic Island also has many artists and galleries. Most will welcome you, but you may want to call them first to arrange an appointment. Just go to: whatsonmagenticisland.com.au and look for the 'Artists & Galleries' tab on the right.
