Parks & Nature

The country’s biggest park is the perfect place to exercise in the good weather. It plays host to various runs and marathons throughout the year and there are many different routes you can take. Run in the sun or use the overhanging trees as shade, and keep an eye out for the wandering deer. As a guide from the apartment to the entrance of the park is 1.5km, and to the centre of Phoenix Park is 4.5km. Get there via Arbour Hill Road or else head down to the River Liffey and run along the docks, which is not much further. A runner on Map My Run logged from Smithfield and a circular run around the park as 13 km.

Please do not start this walk if the weather is bad or it is close to sunset! This is a walk that not a lot of Dubliners have done, so it is well worth bragging rights at the pub. Walk out to the Poolbeg lighthouse. It took 50 years to make it and few people know it. While the wall built to shelter Dublin harbour wasn’t completed until 1795, the lighthouse was actually ready in 1768 and initially operated on candlepower, reputedly the first in the world to do so. The Great South Wall on which Poolbeg Lighthouse stands, extends from Ringsend over 4km out to sea. It was the world’s longest sea-wall at the time of it’s construction and remains one of the longest to this day in Europe.

Ireland's Eye comprises the main island, a range of rocks and an islet called Thulla. The most spectacular feature is the huge freestanding rock called "the Stack", at the northeastern corner of the island, which plays host to a large variety of seabirds, including thousands of guillemots, razorbills, fulmars and gulls. Ireland's fifth gannet colony became established on the Stack in the 1980s, and there are now a few hundred pairs breeding there each year. There is a large cormorant colony on the main island, and a few breeding pairs of puffins. Grey seals are abundant in the sea around the island.

Pretend to be the Famous Five and head over to Dalkey Island. An uninhabited island, unless you count the goats, there are remains of houses, a church and a Martello Tower. Catch the ferry from Coliemore Harbour, which is in itself a delight. It takes only 5 minutes to get there. Bring a picnic or a bottle of wine.

Sightseeing

Often forgotten in the rush to get to The Trinity Library and see the Book of Kells, Marsh’s Library is tucked away behind a narrow metal gate in a high stone wall that extends from the back of St Patrick’s Cathedral. You could easily pass the library by without noticing. However, if you follow the peppery smell of leather up the stairs that lead inside, you will discover a tiny haven of history and learning, and a Gothic world in miniature. Towers of books line the walls from floor to ceiling.

It has Guinness and local microbrews.

At first hearing about this you might be thinking kitschy stuff and begorrah and begosh, but this is actually a fun and informative way to learn about Irish myths and fairytales. There are a number of rooms, each with their own story. The guides are really entertaining, and the daytime tour is fun for both children and adults. On Friday and Saturday nights, there’s an adults only interactive show, with a darker side to it. Be warned, when you get there a member of the cast will dress you up in a costume – this is part of the interactive experience.

One of Smithfield’s biggest draws is devoted to uisce beatha (ish-kuh ba-ha, ‘the water of life’); that's Irish for whiskey. Visit the Jameson Distillery museum, partake in some whiskey tasting and buy some limited reserves to take home. A word of warning, you might not want to do this visit on the same day as the Guinness Brewery Tour just across the river.

Built on the site of an early Norse chapel from 1095, the current structure dates largely from a reconstruction undertaken under William Robinson in 1686 but is still the only parish church on the north side of the Liffey surviving from a Viking foundation. While the exterior of the church may be unimpressive, the interior boasts some fine woodwork, and an organ (dated 1724) on which Handel is said to have composed his Messiah. The vaults of St. Michan's uniquely contain many mummified remains.

Described by Lonely Planet as not just the best museum in Ireland, but one of the best in Europe, this great free museum should be a must-see for anyone living in or visiting Dublin. Established in 1950, to house the collections of mining magnate, Sir Alfred Chester Beatty, the Library is one of the premier sources for scholarship in both the Old and New Testaments and is home to one of the most significant collections of Islamic and Far Eastern artefacts. A beautiful building inside and out and you might just spot my sister and my grand niece beavering away at one of the workshops.

Sweny's Pharmacy is a curious place that looks like a cross between an apothecary and a delightful old bookshop. A location mentioned in James Joyce's Ulysses, it is run entirely by volunteers who introduce people to the author without bashing them over the head with a heavy copy of his most famous work, but instead hold lively reading groups amid the glass bottles of elixirs and bars of sweet, lemony soap. From the Apartment walk to Ocean House, Smithfield and get either the 67 or 66B or 66 Bus. Or walk through the Trinity College campus to the south end; it’s only a 10-minute walk.

It may have ‘science’ in the title, but each exhibition at the gallery proves it to be the most creative, innovative and artistic venue in Ireland.” – Shane Hegarty, Irish Times, April 2011. Located in the beautiful Trinity College Dublin, is the fantastic concept where art and science collide. From vampire content, to examining burst bubbles, and from questioning which pills we take to debating about the science and future of desire and love – the Science Gallery is not to be missed. Each show is amazing, and super creative, dedicated people who source quirky, enlivening exhibitions run the gallery. Admission to the exhibitions is free, and some of the events also have free admission.
