Hawk Mountain is a wildlife sanctuary and conservatory for raptors (a type of hawk, not dinosaur - sorry Jurassic Park fans) in nearby Kempton, PA. It is a 10-15 minute drive from Hidden River Lodge. Hawk Mountain is also one of the best places in northeastern North America to view the annual autumn hawk migration, and is a fabulous hiking destination with beautiful trails and lookouts. The Pinnacle Loop and Pulpit Rock is a 9.0-mile loop trail near Hamburg, PA, a 15 minute drive from Hidden River Lodge. Generally considered a moderately challenging route, it can take 4-5 hours to complete. According to AllTrails.com, this is a very popular area for backpacking, camping, and hiking. The best times to visit this trail are May through October. It is recommended to hike the loop counterclockwise since you will be climbing boulders at the beginning of the hike, and it’s generally easier on the knees to climb up rather than down. The two breathtaking vistas overlook rural Pennsylvania.
