Unmissable Ramsgate Destinations

This gloriously colourful record store and Ramsgate institute is run by Humby, a local musician, character and business man. This precious place is all that is left of the Vinylhead empire run by Humberto and Antonia which previously stretched all the way around the corner in its last incantation and was the legendary community hub of the recent yesteryear where we all used to gather :D .. Go and see Humby, you wont be disappointed and he has the most amazing collection of records for sale that is constantly being updated. There is a briefcase turntable in the kitchen (please treat it gently) if you wish to spin a few discs !!

Margo is a prolific artist and philathropist living and working in Thanet. Her work is intentioned to make us feel good in the immediate whilst doing our best to help each other and our communities, something we all need so much - especially at this time. Her affordable prints and ceramics make truly wonderful gifts, or just go along to bask in her inclusive positivity, her shop really is a slice of sunshine. She is situated just around the corner from Humby's record store.

The coffee here is, I think, is the best, in Ramsgate .. the staff and young and friendly and the food is delicious for breakfast, brunch, lunch or all three within this extremely tasteful Scandinavian-inspired business. It's also a purveyor of luxurious coffee table books, homewares and childrens' gifts. But the best thing about Archive along with the other arches, is the most amazing view of Ramsgate's Royal Harbour. Head down to Archive to people-watch in the sunshine, you won't regret it.

The most wonderful Children's Bookstore. Even if you just take a look when you walk by this is the most magical little place, always with a fabulous and fantastical window display and it's really wonderful for browsing and buying children's gifts.

If you love music I highly recommend this fantastic small venue for an intimate experience with all-things vibey .... RMH is not just keeping our local music scene alive but is internationally acclaimed. It has a great PA sound system and there is a really stylish bar above it for gig-users. Children are sometimes welcome but this can be a place more for teenagers and adults.

These tunnels evoke a very interesting story regarding Wartime Ramsgate. The cafe is usually open. If the tides are out you can, after visiting, take a picturesque walk from the Main Sands, past the headland and all the way up to Broadstairs' Viking Bay, past small caves and rock pools.

Food scene

I'm unfamiliar with this newer place but the locals tell me its very good and as it's just round the corner I feel I should recommend it as somewhere to take a look at. I hear they also do food. There is lots of good beer to be found in Ramsgate if you are brave enough to look for it. Personally I would go here, most of the places up the great steps that take you high above the Royal Harbour for the stunning views or to The Ravensgate ot the Falstaff on Addington Street.

A fierce local favourite, if you want to meet good people head to the Ravensgate. It also has great stuff on tap and a very welcoming homely atmosphere. Also recommended for good food.

The Falstaff on Addington St might also be worth a look, they have a cobbled beer garden and they also have a lovely first floor private room. They used to do a very good Sunday Lunch, please enquire with them directly if interested. Internally I personally find it quite a quiet and sedate place if you are looking for that sort of peaceful environment but children are definitely welcome. The building also has an interesting Naval history...

Ice cream practically on tap in this lovely little parlour with additional cafe window if you're in a hurry to get straight to the beach. So much choice and they even cater for some allergies, providing things like gluten-free cones. A local favourite with no age limit !

Down by the Main Sands is Peter's Fish Factory which is an institution around these parts, they also have a shop down in Margate. Recommended for kids and food lovers alike, this place is very tasty, you can crab a cone of chips and head to the beach, get a takeaway for home or sit inside for the full works and and warm your cockles. Speaking of cockles there is a cockle stall opposite and down a bit on the edge of the harbour, if you're inclined that way ;-D

Award-winning ‘Flavours of Kumar’ is a much enjoyed local haunt that serves really simple, authentic traditional Indian food. I would describe it as intimate, relaxed and low key .. suitable for everyone. Visit here to eat in with your friends and family or you can order a delivery or pick up. It’s only a short walking distance from our home. Read about Chef Anil here: https://www.greatbritishlife.co.uk/food-and-drink/establishments/restaurant-review-flavours-by-kumar-ramsgate-7198272

A bracing walk down the esplanade is this brilliant no-nonsense, dog and child friendly cafe and Sunday Lunch hang out which - during Peak Season - features an authentic kids boating pool with pedalo hire, several picnic tables, an ice cream shack and expanded venue for live music and dancing on its other side. A selection of live music and performance in the evening is advertised all year round, this is a Ramsgate institution we very much support and enjoy watching evolve and grow, run by gorgeous people.

Our Favourite Beaches

It's impossible to justify visiting Thanet without checking out some of our wonderful beaches....below I'll give you the lowdown on some of them..... Firstly we have three very local beaches that are easy and pleasant to walk to.. - Ramsgate Main Sands (10-15 minutes away): Currently overlooked by a rather dominating but family-friendly Wetherspoon (with a pretty fab terrace where you can watch the sunset) it's still very possible to peacefully and privately enjoy this good-looking, long stretch of no-nonsense community beach which has room for everyone and it's very convenient for young children owing to the sweet little fairground that is more often that not open until around 5pm. Additonally it's in easy proximity to many restaurants, bars and if you so desire, amusement arcades. There is a small carpark on the approach. - East Cliff Promenade Beach: Adjoining the main sands to left is this lovely stretch which also houses the Ramsgate Tunnels and Cafe. You can walk to Broadstairs Viking Beach from here when the tide is far out - (please pick up a tide guide from the Tourist Office beside the Main Sands or check an official tidal website for details). More details of this walk are further below**. - Western Undercliff Beach: On the other side of the Royal Harbour, if you wish experience a more enclosed beach vibe, you can descend to a further beach which has smaller sections and breakers . However if you need to use a baby stroller I would travel and park by car. If you wish to walk from the promenade past the harbour views (a great place to ride bikes, trikes, scooters and there is a little park with playground at the very end) be warned that there are several flights of steps to descend and then a road at the bottom to cross. Note: it's otherwise very manageable to walk and sometimes the cafe is open on the promenade for drinks and treats but if you do use this route with children, please be vigilant when crossing the road at the bottom as sometimes motorbike riders drive down this road quite fast. There is also a Boating Pool along the promenade where dining and entertainment pop-up events have been known to take place - so keep an eye out. Additonally, Pegwell Bay, interesting for wildlife observation, foraging and fossils, is overlooked by a pub where you can dine, drink and look down upon lovely coastal views and seabird life (you can also sometimes observe grazing wild ponies or cattle around these parts) but it is primarily a nature reserve so you can't actually walk on the beach itself. Other Beach recommendations: - Margate Main Sands (Please see the Welcome Book for more details and advice on the best spots to aim for), Dreamland and the Turner Gallery. - Also very much worth visiting: Walpole Bay and the Walpole Bay Hotel Joss Bay - Broadstairs Viking Bay: Another good one for children, with some beach inflatables, accessibility and close proximity to bars and restaurants with small available car parks. Don't forget to visit the famously kitsch and local Morelli's Ice Cream Parlour or look out for the clifftop Charles Dicken's Bleak House (now privately owned). Recommended Walk: **When the tide is far out (see further above for safety advice and precautions regarding this) you can easily access Viking Bay by foot from the adjoining Ramsgate Main Sands and East Cliff Promenade Beach. A really lovely walk which takes around 25 minutes or so past small caves, rock pools and overlooking the wind turbines in the distance but it's equally fun to meander and take your time. - Botany Bay - Broadstairs (featured in the photo above) This is a very beautiful beach to visit, one of our very favourites ! Not much around in terms of restaurants so take a picnic and plenty of water but highly recommended. - Further afield: Herne Bay (Beach, antiques, Ice Cream, Seafood) Whitstable Beach (Shingle Beach, antiques, Ice Cream, Seafood) - Deal (Mainly shingle) plus great end of cafe pier and the wonderful Walmer Castle and grounds (great for History, family time), Sandwich, Folkestone (including the wonderful Dungeness Beach where Derek Jarman's house is situated) and Dymchurch (little childrens Fair, close to zoo), then the endless sands of St Mary's Bay towards Dover.
