Walkers come from all over the world to enjoy the 177 mile national trail. You can enjoy the dyke straight from your garden gate or venture further afield to see different stretches of this wonderful footpath.

This ancient drovers' route is 15 miles (24 km) long, running from Cider House Farm, near the village of Kerry, to Bishops Castle . It route follows a ridgetop overlooking Wales on the one side and England on the other. It never dips below 1000 ft (300 m)above sea level, with remarkable views in all directions

We like this walk so much we arranged a charity walk for Hector's Greyhound Rescue along the stretch closest to Welshpool. And of course stopped at the Raven Inn afterwards for refreshments. Near Llanidloes the trail passes through the Bryntail Lead Mine and close to the Llyn Clwydog Dam (see separate entries)

The Stiperstones are a series of amazing rocky outcrops spread along a beautiful ridge in South Shropshire with stunning views over Shropshire Hills and the Welsh border. The site is a National Nature Reserve.

Historic Montgomery Castle, dating back to the 13th Century stands in a commanding position above the town with far reaching views. It fell to the Parliamentarians during the Civil War following the bloodiest battle of that conflict which took place on the fields between the castle and out hut. It has remained as ruins since 1649. There is a car park close to the castle allowing reasonably level access (but no other facilities). The more adventurous may chose to park in the town (which is worth a visit in its own right) and climb the steep hill to the castle. The castle is free to visit and is open:
1 April - 30 September Daily 10.00am - 6.00pm.
1 October - 31 March Daily 10.00am - 4.00pm
Unfortunately dogs are not permitted.

We like to combine coming to Wroxeter with a visit to nearby Haughmond Abbey
Most of my guidebook entries mention amazing views but the views here are simply breath-taking. There is a small car park at the end of a very uneven unmade track - those driving cars with low suspension may prefer to park at the top of the track and walk down.

The highest waterfall in Wales and at 240ft (80m) high it is Britain's tallest single-drop waterfall. The tricky access (4 miles along a single track road) is well worth the effort. Parking at the waterfall is camera controlled and costs £5 on weekdays and £10 at weekends. Parking is possible at some points on the approach road. There is a tearoom and toilets at the waterfall. The waterfall is best viewed at ground level. There is a lovely walk up to the top where there are good views of the scenery - but not of the waterfall

This is not so much a local favourite as a hidden gem. The church is a beautiful timber and white building in a field surrounded by beautiful countryside and, or course, wonderful views. The church is open to visitors most days between 10am and 4pm and is regularly used for Sunday services. Just a magical setting

To get the full benefit of the falls at Devil's Bridge (or Pontarfynach) you need to do the full woodland walk - they advise you allow a minimum of 45 minutes - we probably allow twice that to take it all in. The waterfalls are amazing. There are some steep slippery or uneven steps so not advised if you have mobility issues. The shorter walk (advertised as 10 to 20 minutes but really much shorter) gives an impressive view of the "punchbowls" but these can also be seen from the road bridge. Fans of BBC's Hinterland will recognise the bridge, and the hotel opposite the exit from the woodland walk, from the series. A visit here, combined with nearby Bwlch Nant Yr Arian, is my favourite day out.

To get the full benefit of the falls at Devil's Bridge (or Pontarfynach) you need to do the full woodland walk - they advise you allow a minimum of 45 minutes - we probably allow twice that to take it all in. The waterfalls are amazing. There are some steep slippery or uneven steps so not advised if you have mobility issues. The shorter walk (advertised as 10 to 20 minutes but really much shorter) gives an impressive view of the "punchbowls" but these can also be seen from the road bridge. Fans of BBC's Hinterland will recognise the bridge, and the hotel opposite the exit from the woodland walk, from the series. A visit here, combined with nearby Bwlch Nant Yr Arian, is my favourite day out.

On most days over 100 birds will visit. My favourite day out is a trip to nearby Devil's Bridge falls (Pontarfynach) in the morning, then lunch here before seeing the kite feeding.

They are fed daily by the lake at 2pm in winter (GMT) and at 3pm in summer (BST). Follow the accessible Barcud Trail to the viewing area or further around the lake to the large bird hide. On most days over 100 birds will visit. My favourite day out is a trip to nearby Devil's Bridge falls (Pontarfynach) in the morning, then lunch here before seeing the kite feeding.

Sitting at the base of the Llyn Clwydog dam, a visit to the lead mine fits well with a visit to the stunning Llyn Clywdog reservoir (see separate entry). Parking at the Lead Mine is limited so best to visit at a quiet time if possible.
