Among the oldest and most historic bars in the country, Neir’s Tavern is located in the Woodhaven area of Queens in New York City, near the Brooklyn border. Over 190 years old, it is one of the few old drinking establishments that have been in almost continuous operation (Prohibition notwithstanding) and in the same location, for its entire history. Neir’s is known as the tavern where as a child, Mae West used to dance (and possibly first performed) in the ballroom, which featured a wooden balcony with small hotel rooms around the upper walls, similar to the Wild West dancehalls of the movies and television. Robert Dinero in the film Goodfellas at Neir’s Tavern (1990) It has also gained fame as the bar in which the classic Martin Scorsese film, Goodfellas, starring Robert DeNiro, Joe Pesci, Ray Liotta and Lorraine Bracco, was filmed. Tower Heist, a movie starring Ben Stiller, Eddie Murphy, Tea Leoni & Alan Alda was filmed here in the fall of 2013.

Great sandwich and hot dinner meals around the corner, though short hours, 8am-4pm Tuesday thru Saturday, but worth the effort to stop, maybe a grab a lunch for a day in Manhattan adventure kinda thing.

Caracas Arepa Bar is devoted to the pleasure of homemade Venezuelan food. Since 2003 we have been dedicated to the idea of a space where authentic quality food converges with the eclectic vibe of our city. What began as a small arepa store front in the East Village has paved the path to our full service Williamsburg, Brooklyn restaurant, and a beachside arepa outpost in Rockaway Beach, Queens. The Williamsburg location boasts a large dining room, outdoor patio space and a full cocktail bar we call, Roneria Caracas. Roneria essentially means “Rum Bar”, and a rum bar we are! With over 40 rums from Central America, South America and the Caribbean Islands, we are always coming up with something new for you to try in our Brooklyn location. Our Rockaway Beach location opened in 2011 and is the newest member of the Caracas Arepa Bar family. The Rockaway location is seasonal, open mid-May through September. Come by and see us at the beach all summer long and enjoy your arepa in it’s natural environment: beachside! Our secret is consistency. It starts with a great deal of attention to choosing quality ingredients, and a lot of love for the craft of bringing the best of Venezuelan food to every table. No matter where you come from, whether you are part of the family or a first-time guest, you will feel the warmth of our dedication through the joy of our meals. We are not a fast food joint, and certainly not a "Nuevo Latino" restaurant. From the beginning, we have been driven by a combination of nostalgia, entrepreneurship, and authenticity. Our passion is our craft and our pleasure is being able to share it with you. Caracas Arepa Bar is only possible thanks to the dedication of its team led by native Venezuelans, Maribel Araujo and Aristides Barrios.

Forest Hills is a diverse family-oriented neighborhood in the center of Queens. On Austin Street, you’ll find restaurants serving a variety of cuisines, boutiques and chain stores. Families and shoppers stroll along this retail strip all day and into the evening. Forest Hills Gardens occupies the area south of Austin Street. Unlike any other residential zone in the city, its Tudor and Georgian homes look much the same as when they were built in the early 20th century. Continue south to Forest Park for hiking and sport facilities. The E, F, M and R trains stop at the Forest Hills-71st Avenue subway station, which puts you one block away from the middle of Austin Street.

Activities

Built in the 1930's this neighborhood house called the Austin has had more faces then Eve. Spent years as a second run double feature house, until being taken over by Rugoff Theatres in the late 50's or early 60's. Art films were played for a few years catering to the affluent area and nearby Forest Hills. Then United Artists took over for a few years playing mostly move overs and booking midnight shows every Friday and Saturday night. When UA dumped it, it became a XXX house and was extremely profitable. The owner even played the midnight shows for a while that UA had built up an audience for. It then went all porno, later being taken over by the same owner of the Polk until it was shut down by the city (a story in itself). The story has a happy ending: new owners bought the place, stripped it down to its minor Art Deco origins and made a mini version of the Angelika. The huge lobby has a concession stand where you can get coffee and fresh cookies. Two theatres were made in the old loge and restroom area on the second floor. Downstairs are four screens, number one keeping the original mini stage and arch. The other four auditoriums have top notch sound and projection and rocking chair seats stadium style. The Kew Gardens is a total delight to attend, heres hoping it survives forever.

Shirley Chisholm State Park is named in honor of Shirley Chisholm, a Brooklyn-born trailblazer who was the first African American Congresswoman, as well as the first woman and African American to run for President. Rising up 130 feet above sea level, this new park occupies some of the highest ground in New York City and offers spectacular panoramic views of the Empire State Building to the northwest, the Verrazano-Narrows Bridge and New York Harbor to the west, and Jamaica Bay to the south. The site, which has never been open to the public before, rests atop the former Pennsylvania and Fountain Avenue landfills. The Penn and Fountain landfills were operated by New York City Department of Sanitation from 1956 to 1983. After the landfills were closed, the work to reclaim and repurpose the 407 acres of land as a future park began. The first steps were to install an impermeable plastic cap and a below-ground barrier to fully encapsulate the landfills and support future reuse. A below grade methane gas piping system was also installed throughout the property so that all off gassing is carried to the property's two flares. More than 1.2 million cubic yards of clean soil - or enough to fill nearly 100,000 dump trucks - was spread up to four feet deep across the site. The site was then planted with more than 35,000 trees and shrubs, and native grassland species. This addition of prairie grass and native plants has created a diverse ecosystem of coastal meadows, wetlands, and woodlands that has attracted a variety of birds and other local wildlife. In addition, this lovely ecosystem works to protect the capped land and prevent erosion. In 1974, the city deeded the land to the National Park Service as part of Gateway National Recreation Area. Under a cooperative agreement with the National Park Service and the City of New York, New York State Parks is developing and operating Shirley Chisholm State Park. After years of anticipation, Shirley Chisholm State Park is now open 365 days per year, 8 a.m. to dusk. The park offers: 10 miles of biking and hiking trails - please stay on the trails!
