8.4 miles, 19 minutes drive from Ty Carreg. Coity Castle is a romantic castle which was originally founded in the early 12th century where it began as an earthwork castle. Although the castle is now a ruin it has remaining features from each era shedding light on its long and storied life. The castle grounds are an ideal place to sit and enjoy the sun and feel the history of your surroundings. The castle is open all year round with the exception of 24th, 25th, 26th December and the 1st January from 10am-4pm and admission is FREE. Coity is an old traditional village boasting a small friendly pub. At the Six Bells, you can enjoy a refreshing drink or a tasty meal.

13 miles, 32 minute drive from Ty Carreg. Candleston Castle was built as a fortified manor house in the later part of the 14th century. The lands of the manor later became covered with dunes and thus making them valueless. The dunes are now quite famous and popular with athletes, who come from all over the world to train on this very tasking terrain. ‘The Big Dipper’ being the most difficult and sort after dune for these athletes. As you drive toward the Candleston car park, you travel through Merthyr Mawr village. The pretty thatched cottages makes this village possibly the most chocolate box village in Wales. Before you get to Candleston car park, there is a road on the left that takes you to a small car park where you can cross a small white footbridge that takes you over the River Ogmore towards Ogmore Castle and it’s stepping stones. Get back in your car and drive to Candleston car park, there is a small fee to park here. The castle is on the left hand side of the car park, through the trees. The dunes are also a popular place for picnickers and sand sledging.

13 miles, 26 minute drive from Ty Carreg. Ogmore Castle overlooks the picturesque Ogmore river crossing with it’s ancient stepping stones. Across the river and a little walk away is the pretty village of Merthyr Mawr along with Candleston Castle and Merthyr Mawr’s famous sand dunes. There is a small car park alongside the castle but beware, this can sometimes flood at high tide due to it’s close proximity to the river Ogmore. There are several pubs / restaurants in this area and if you follow the main road you will arrive at Ogmore beach and further along the coast, Southerdown beach. 10miles, 23 minute drive from Ty Carreg. Along with its neighbours at Coity and Ogmore, Newcastle guarded the important river crossings which once controlled access into Glamorgan. Renovations were made to the castle in the 1180s when the Castle was held by Henry II. The castle itself is situated overlooking the town of Bridgend at the top of Newcastle Hill. There is a small car park approximately 100 metres from the castle entrance which is free to visitors. As you walk towards the castle, you will come across small quirky cottages many of which are grade II listed buildings. 21 miles, 37 minute drive from Ty Carreg. Old Beaupre Castle is more a medieval manor than a castle. Built in two stages, the building still has some of its impressive features. The three-storeyed gatehouse and striking porch is decorated with columns inspired by the architecture of ancient Greece. 250 metres from the structure is a small car park for approximately 3 cars. The castle is open all year round with the exception of 24th, 25th, 26th December and the 1st January from 10am-4pm and admission is FREE. The Inn also has pre-bookable dining cabins where up to 8 people can have their own private dining experience for a fee of £10 per hour. See website https://www.bushinn-sthilary.com/ 2.5 miles (8 minute drive) is the old town of Cowbridge. Most of Cowbridge High Street and the roads off it are lined with little independent shops. Dig into the fashion and furniture archives, pick out speciality ingredients or put together a souvenir bouquet, Cowbridge will delight the keenest of shoppers.
