Beautiful places to visit on the Island

The name Llanddwyn means "The church of St. Dwynwen". Dwynwen is the Welsh patron saint of lovers, making her the Welsh equivalent of St. Valentine. Her Saint's day is 25 January and is often celebrated by the Welsh with cards and flowers. The island bears the ruined remains of St Dwynwen's Church.

C F Tunnicliffe, the famous naturalist and wildlife artist lived here. It’s a lovely walk along the cob. There’s a car park at each end. One of the car parks affords good views of red squirrels. Park you car and look at the trees. There are squirrel feeding stations.

Anglesey Stepping Stones are another of this great little island’s hidden gems. They are often referred to as the Giant’s Stepping Stones or the Rhuddgaer Stepping Stones. The stepping stones are hidden away and are easy to miss unless you are walking the Anglesey Coastal Path. This means that the area is usually quite quiet when you visit. The Anglesey Stepping Stones provides a bridge of sorts over the River, Afon Braint. It allows walkers to continue on the Anglesey coastal path. Afon Braint is a tidal river which means whenever you visit the area it may look different.

Newborough Warren is one of the largest and finest dune systems in Britain. The dunes, coastal marshes, sandy and rocky shores have been shaped over thousands of years by the wind and sea and are home to a dazzling array of plants and animals. Newborough Warren together with Ynys Llanddwyn were declared the first coastal National Nature Reserve in Wales in 1955. The Corsican pine trees that make up Newborough Forest were planted between 1947 and 1965 to provide timber and to stabilise the shifting sand dunes.

Aberffraw dunes are one of the most extensive examples of mobile dune habitat in the UK. It is situated to the east of the village of Aberffraw, across the Afon Ffraw. The dunes, along with Traeth Mawr beach and Llyn Coron (at the north-eastern end of the dune system) have been designated as a Site of Special Scientific (SSSI). The dunes have open access (on foot) and there is a parking area on the western side, just off the A4080 main road. Refreshments are available in Aberffraw at the Llys Llewelyn visitor centre and café (which is open during the main tourist season). The varied habitats support lots of interesting plants and insects

A short walk from Menai Bridge town centre brings the visitor to the base of the Menai Suspension Bridge, from where the true scale of this remarkable structure is best appreciated. The Belgian Promenade (built by Flemish refugees from the Great War between 1914-16) leads south west from here shortly reaching a causeway that links Church island and the ancient Church of St Tysilio to the shore. A short walk around the church cemetery affords wonderful views of the Menai Strait, both bridges and Ynys Gorad Goch island, whose residents once made a living from the fish caught at the traps built there. Menai Bridge has a selection of interesting shops, including antiques, books and ironmongers. There is a good collection of pubs and restaurants catering for all tastes, including local seafood.

Beaumaris on the island of Anglesey is famous as the greatest castle never built. It was the last of the royal strongholds created by Edward I in Wales – and perhaps his masterpiece. Here Edward and his architect, James of St George, took full advantage of a blank canvas: the ‘beau marais’ or ‘beautiful marsh’ beside the Menai Strait. By now they’d already constructed the great castles of Conwy, Caernarfon and Harlech. This was to be their crowning glory, the castle to end all castles. The result was a fortress of immense size and near-perfect symmetry. No fewer than four concentric rings of formidable defences included a water-filled moat with its very own dock. The outer walls alone bristled with 300 arrow loops. But lack of money and trouble brewing in Scotland meant building work had petered out by the 1320s. The south gatehouse and the six great towers in the inner ward never reached their intended height. The Llanfaes gate was barely started before being abandoned.

Penmon Point is on the north east coast of Anglesey with views across the mainland, Great Orme and of course Puffin Island (Ynys Seiriol). Also a great place to spot dolphins and harbour porpoise in summer. Seals resident to Puffin island are often seen close to the shore around Penmon Point.

Moelfre is quite a pretty little pebble beach overlooked by the village. The bay is very sheltered and the slipway makes it a popular spot for launching boats. Whilst there are wide sandy beaches a pebble’s throw from Moelfre, this little cove has a charm of its own and is a lovely spot to sit and watch the world go by
