Bar super sympa en plein parc des Buttes Chaumont terrasse au soleil et dansant le soir (ferme à 00h) victime de son succès si on y va pas dès le début de soirée on risque de faire la queue ! Time out says : Bucolic delights reign at Rosa Bonheur, a bar set in a former guinguette in the heart of the Buttes Chaumont park. Its name loosely translates as ‘pink happiness’ but refers in particular to 19th-century French painter and sculptor ‘Rosa Bonheur’, famous for her depictions of animals and her role in the early feminist movement (alongside George Sand and Sarah Bernhardt). The bar is managed by Michelle Cassaro, aka Mimi, who used to run lesbian club Pulp – and the bar is a popular hangout with the lesbian crowd, especially on Sunday evenings. But the Bonheur is nothing if not relaxed in every sense, and for Parisians of all persuasions its terrace is the place to see and be seen in the summer – an idyllic spot in the park for wine and tapas with just the birds, bees and bobos for company. Un beau bar Bel espace, très haut de plafond friperie à l'intérieur On y va pour la "beauté du lieu" en journée ou le soir Brunch africain le dimanche Eclectic, easy-going venues like this are more common in Barcelona than in Paris, but here in an old 600 square-metre barn is this offbeat, shabby chic bar, touched with colonial stylings in its black and white tiled floors, stylish chandeliers, red carpets and African souvenirs piled up in every corner. As you walk in, the size of the space blows you away – two enormous, shadowy rooms connected by a smoking area formed from a tropical garden in an enormous greenhouse that creates a well of light in the centre of the venue. In another corner sits a cabinet of curiosities, full of neat rows of skeletons, rare bird feathers and stuffed animals. Hipsters, boho-chic types and families are all tumbled in together here – a varied but very Parisian mix. We love the atmosphere of the place and its amazing setting, with its odd assortment of armchairs, affordable cocktails, blues and jazz soundtrack and menu of inexpensive Asian dishes. On the downside, a battle for seating rages in the evenings, and the queue outside that builds from 8pm can stretch waiting times into hours. To be sure of enjoying the venue – hidden behind a block of houses on the banks of the Canal Saint-Martin – come as early as possible. On weekends, a Franco-African brunch is on offer at €16, but try and reserve, as it’s often full.

10 min environ à pieds de l'appartement. Le vrai + de ce bar c'est son jardin un peu caché avec des chaises longues ! Ferme à 00h Time out advice : Located in the 18th-century former convent of Les Récollets, Café A is unique, nestling as it does into one of the corners of this beautiful building of huge white stones. It’s an artistic landmark beloved by Parisian initiates – to reach it, you’ll need to navigate your way through an iron gate and across a cloistered courtyard. Open until 10pm in winter and until midnight in summer, the huge space is decorated with works by young Parisian artists, in a series of exhibitions that’s refreshed every so often over the course of the summer. But the real draw of this bar is its secret garden, protected from the street by a surrounding wall – a vast, poetic courtyard planted with old trees. An array of chaises longues are set out like an invitation to relax, peacefully reading a book during the day or with a glass in hand in the evening. On the menu are good quality (but not cheap) organic and biodynamic wines, as well as bruschetta, salads, charcuterie and cheese plates and a main dish of the day – order at the bar if you don’t want to die of hunger, as service is slow and quickly gets overloaded. Be aware that it closes at 10, so come in the day for the best of the garden, or before 7pm to be sure of finding a seat outside. The café also puts on a cool programme of entertainment: small concerts on weekends, but also cine-concerts, live sets from underground music station Radio Nova, artistic performances and DJ sets get the courtyard moving. The weekend programme can be found on their Facebook page. No reservations.

Club entrée payante après 00h, voir selon la programmation (20€ souvent) plusieurs espaces dont une terrasse Club, fee entrance after 00h, depending on the programming (20 € often) more spaces including a terrace Time out says : "The Bellevilloise is the latest incarnation of a building that once housed the capital's very first workers' co-operative. Now it competently multitasks as a bar, restaurant, club and exhibition space, hosting regular film and music festivals on the top level (where there's a fake lawn with deckchairs and a massage area). Enjoy brunch in the Halle aux Oliviers or decent views of the quartier from the charming terrace; downstairs the club-cum-concert venue has launched some of Paris's most exciting new bands, and on '80s nights you can hardly move for the thirtysomethings living it up like they were 20 again. Time out : An enormously popular new bar in Menilmontant, opened on a huge rooftop with a 360 degree view of the capital. Despite ‘speakeasy’ pretentions (the street entrance is unmarked), the place is becoming a victim of its own success, with queues out of the front door to be endured before you take the lift to the 7th floor. But once you do make it up there, you’ll find a vast space surrounding a handsome bar, comfortable sofas strewn with cushions, colourful plants and scented herbs planted in pots around the seats or hung from railings. Watching he sunset over the Sacré-Coeur, glass in hand, under garlands of coloured lights, really is something special. On the menu, you could try the cocktail of the day (€12), a slightly pricy draught beer (€5 a half) or an imported bottled beer from places as far flung as Mexico and the Czech Republic. For wine, it’s cheaper to share a bottle – careful, the bill adds up quickly. Tapas is also on offer. For your best chance of getting a seat, come very early (5.30pm) or quite late (10pm) – or to be certain of that view, reserve a table in the restaurant, on the penultimate floor of the building.

A new shop to buy French products to eat and drink for "aperitif time" !
Covering seven hectares, 3,000 traders and up to 180,000 visitors each weekend, the Marché aux Puces de St-Ouen is generally thought to be the biggest flea market in the world. If this conjures up images of a sprawling field filled with broken bed frames, faded curtains and sofas with the stuffing coming out, you're in for a surprise (and are better off going to the Montreuil version). The fleas left long ago, and since 1885 what started as a rag-and-bone shantytown outside the city limits has been organised into a series of enclosed villages, some entirely covered and others with open-air streets and covered boutiques for the antiques dealers. South of this sprawls the canvas-covered part where African tat, joss sticks, fake Converse trainers and cheap batteries are perused by crowds of teenagers - best avoided unless you're after that kind of thing. In recent years rents have shot up. The result is that much of the Puces is more like a museum than a flea market, and restaurants are swiftly replacing antiques dealers who can no longer make ends meet. But once you get under its skin, the Puces still offers an intoxicating blend of the sublime and the ridiculous. Repeat visits pay off and the more you banter with the sellers (preferably in French) the more bargains will reveal themselves, especially in the couple of streets that still sell unrestored objects. The main street is rue des Rosiers, and off this runs Marché Malassis (toys, vintage cameras and furniture), Marché Dauphine (furniture, ceramics), Marché Biron (expensive lighting, furniture and objets) and Marché Vernaison (more varied, with fashion, a gilding shop, books, prints and kitchenware). The open-air Marché Paul Bert (one of the two markets owned by the Duke of Westminster) has some beautiful 19th- and 20th-century furniture, though you'll need to bargain hard. But if you are looking for genuine bargains and unrenovated things Marché Lecuyer is the place to head: as the home of house-clearance specialists, it's the closest thing you'll find to a reclamation yard and many of the traders have warehouses that they may open for you if you are searching for something in particular. Top tips Enter the market from Garibaldi métro rather than Porte de St-Ouen - a longer trek on line 13 but you avoid the crowds and new tat. Visit on a Monday morning, a cold, wet or snowy day, or in mid August - you're more likely to pick up a bargain. If you like the look of something, don't pick it up or touch it. This already shows the dealer that you want it. Be prepared to walk away if you really want that good deal. Bring cash with you (but keep an eye on your wallet). Some only take it, and for others it's a good bargaining tool. There is only one cashpoint and there is always a queue.
