Sightseeing

The village of Minerve was a last Cathar strong hold, al island with deep river gorges either side . Relais Chantovent is a restaurant perched on the edge of the gorge with spectacular views and gorgeous food. We have known the chefs work since he had Le Picou in the neighbouring village of La Caunette. We love the ambience of the restaurant and as I said you do not get a bad meal whilst there. So you get to visit a beautiful Minervois village and eat fabulous food in a stunning location.

Great photo opportunities here, breathtaking drop down into the gouffre from the glass surface above . If you like the idea of pot holing you can take a guided walk down the gouffre and along the tunnel. Historically it has been a hideout, wine cellar, probable home to our ancestors and if you love geology there are great rock formations, stalactites and stalagmites. Not far from here is another grotte called Grotte de Limousis which is also worth a visit

Lagrasse is a Abbey village located on a beautiful river which is great for swimming. The Abbey is a working abbey, one can often bump into the occasional Italian student priest clutching his robes and books. Take a wander around the old streets and you will find craft shops and restaurants. Lovely place just to wander and relax

This is a family beach or a couples beach. It is perfect. Nothing like Narbonne plage , it is a quieter village nestled at the foothills of pine forest, with cafes, restaurants, surf shops, ok yes it has a small funfair. It has a small étang which is a safe place for kids to paddle, skin board, go crabbing , swim. The beach is clean and watched over by life guards, no jet skis, no bananas or tyres , just calm with aboard walk for a stroll. Of all the beaches on this coast line it is our families N°1. Also has a great hike above the village towards Leucate along the coastal route passed the old lighthouse.

Collioure is a beautiful cove protected by three forts. Artists flocked here for the sunlight, scenery and calm. The town itself is a bustling tourist mecca so best avoided in August unless you get there early. There are some lovely B&Bs, and hotels here as a base to travel further down the coast to Cebère and onto the Spanish border. A large choice of restaurants to sit on the harbour square and watch the world pass by then take a wall along the harbour walls.

Food scene

there is no category here to list the fact we can organise food and wine tastings of the region in your holiday apartment. A Taste of Le Sud A tutored wine and food tasting over lunch or dinner Experience a Tutored Wine and Food Tasting with Emma Kershaw of La Maison du Rire, the wine and food school in the Corbières, and learn about the wines, gastronomy, culture and history of this fantastically diverse region in the comfort of your holiday home. For groups of ten or more Emma will come to Château St Martin either for a lunchtime tasting or in the evening over dinner. The tasting lasts approximately three hours and incorporates a varied selection of eight wines from across the entire region. Each wine is partnered with local, seasonal and home made dishes prepared by Emma to highlight the wine and the quality of the produce found here. There is at least one dish per wine, and where possible the produce is organic, and always sourced from small, high quality farms. During the Tasting your guests will learn about the Languedoc-Roussillon, its wines and food. They will be taught not only how to taste wine like a professional but also how to analyse the relationship between wine and food; looking at the affect that the key elements of sweet, sour, bitter and salt have on wine, and also wines affect on food. This is a fun and sociable way to learn about wine and food, and a great introduction to the Languedoc-Roussillon. The cost per person (for a minimum of 8) is 70€, this includes all wines, food, tasting materials, travel time and costs. Most dietary requirements can be catered for, but must be advised of when booking. It is worth noting that Emma only uses the best of ingredients and so if you follow more of a flexitarian diet rather than a vegetarian or vegan diet, you can rest assured of the sustainability and high quality of the produce served. At the end of the tasting guests will have the opportunity to purchase a copy of A Taste of Le Sud, Emma’s recently published book covering the recipes and wine matches used in the tasting. A great souvenir of both the holiday and the event.
