City/town information

The Medieval City of Rhodes (also called the Old Town) is a UNESCO World Heritage Site with an enchanting charm that takes us back through history. Built on top of ruins dating back to the ancient Greeks, this beautifully preserved city exhibits Byzantine, Ottoman, Jewish and Italian influences, as well as that of the Knights of Saint John's. Located on an easily accessible by foot, quiet, and clean street, the house provides a true Old Town living experience. Our neighbours are all locals, many of whose families have lived on this street for generations. When you're ready for a livelier scene, a convenient ten minute walk will take you to the center square of the Old Town where you will find restaurants, shops, bars and cafes. Some of Rhodes' most impressive historical sites are in the Old Town, such as the Grand Master Palace. For those seeking to experience Greece's bustling nightlife, it's easy to find but far enough away not to disturb your sleep. Cars are not allowed inside but there is free public parking just outside the fortress walls, less than a 10 minute walk from the house. To get to the modern city of Rhodes Town, you can walk there through the Old Town in 15 minutes, or grab a taxi from the nearby taxi station. From the new town you can access the main city bus station with buses that go all over the island, including to and from the airport; the harbour with day cruises around Rhodes or to other nearby islands; or you can easily get to the marina where the ferries that travel to other parts of Greece go in and out from. The house is located close to one of the entrances to the old moat that surrounds the Old Town, which has been turned into a park and is an excellent destination for a walk, a picnic, or a jog if you're a runner!

If you're ready to take a break from Greek food, this spot offers excellent salads, sandwiches and wraps. The flavours are the result of homemade sauces, chutneys, and pickles by chef and owner Christos who puts a lot of love into his offerings.

OK we know you didn't come to Greece to eat tacos- but seriously, this place is worth a visit! The small but thoughtful menu of tacos options is so bursting with flavour you'll never think of tacos the same again. Next time you're heading home after a swim at Eli beach, try it out- we guarantee you'll go back again.

Located on the west side of the island near the airport, this small Cantina (beach food cart) style eatery has some of the freshest Greek home cooking you can find, and it's right on the beach where you can watch kite surfers. Its location is a little out of the way, but if you're driving that direction to visit Monolithos or the Valley of the Butterflies, or maybe on your way to or from the airport, make sure to stop in for lunch! Only open for lunch between 11-18:00.

Bars

This is a laid back bar/restaurant that mostly young or artsy locals hang out in. They often have live music, art showings, handmade crafts shows, etc. It's very relaxed scene so don't go if you're in a hurry- the service is sometimes slow but it's all part of the experience.

If you take a road trip down south to the beautiful beach of Gennadi, check out this cute cafe/bar in the village as well. A welcoming and relaxing specialty coffee shop by day that turns into a bar at night with delicious cocktails and a selection of Greek beers. They are closed during the afternoon siesta time.

Getting around Rhodes

Taxis from the airport cost 23-26 euros. Cars are prohibited inside the Old Town (except for full-time residents) so you must walk in the Old Town. It helps to have a GPS with you as the streets are winding and confusing- it's easy to feel lost. Most of the paths are uneven cobblestone so unfortunately not accessible for people with difficulties walking or for people who rely on a wheel chair to get around. We also don't recommend shoes with heels! Outside of the Old Town, you can use taxis, busses, or rent-a-car to get anywhere. For car rentals, the best prices are at the airport.

Quiet Hours

In Greece we observe quiet hours between 15:00 - 17:30 and 23:00 - 7:00. This means no loud noise, music, construction or other noise disturbances are allowed, and violators may be penalised with fines.

Day Boat trips

An excellent way to enjoy the island is to see it by sea! In Mandraki (the port in Rhodes Town) there are many options for day trips on boats to other beaches on Rhodes, including Lindos (worth a trip, whether by sea or by car). You can also take a day trip to another island like Symi (highly recommended, it's a beautiful island with colourful little houses), or Chalki, a tiny island with less than 500 residents off the coast of Rhodes.

Farmer's Market on Thursdays

Just outside the Old Town, near the Kokkini Porta Entrance, there's a farmer's market every Thursday from 8-15:00. You'll find the freshest and cheapest local vegetables and fruits there, not to mention a chance to interact with true locals!

Favorite Beaches: Kallithea

Rhodes has a great beach right in town- Eli beach. You can walk there from the house in 20 minutes; however, we recommend visiting some other beaches as well. Kallithea has several swimming spots. There is the main Kalithea Spa beach used to be known for its healing waters where a spa was built in the 1920's. Today the baths are no longer in use but it's a popular swimming spot with a cafe/restaurant and a popular setting for weddings.

Favourite Beaches: Nikolas Beach

Next to Kallithea Spa is Nikolas Beach- special because it's the only place on the island where you can eat fresh cooked Greek food and sea food while sitting with your feet in the water! The unique rock formations make an interesting landscape and the water is very clean and refreshing.

Favourite Beaches: Agathi Beach

Agathi Beach is farther down the eastern coast of the island and a little off the beaten path. The shallow turquoise waters and white sand are more reminiscent of Caribbean beaches and well worth spending an afternoon there if you have a car.

Favourite Beaches: Gennadi

Gennadi is in the South of Rhodes, past Lindos. It's one of the few beaches on the east coast that is fairly quiet as many people don't make it out that far, but it has some of the cleanest and most beautiful water on the island. If you make it out that far, you can stop by Mojito Beach Bar for a snack or a drink and some funky fun atmosphere.

How to eat Mezedes

The classic way to enjoy a meal in Greece is to order mezedes. These are Greek "tapas"- small plates that are meant to be shared in a group. When looking a Greek menu you'll see many mezedes and we recommend you order a selection with a mix of vegetables, cheeses, seafood and meat (or according to your dietary needs) so you can taste many local flavours. Don't be shy to ask for recommendations! Some places will specialise more in seafood, some more in meat, but everywhere will cater to vegetarian and probably even to vegan needs too.
