A bit of a walk, but there are lakes with ducks, cormorants and elusive kingfishers, always a Cruftian plethora of assorted dogs in the wild bit, more varieties of tree than Kew has, a formal bit with roses, bandstand and tea room, a fine greenhouse that has been rescued from desuetude by Linda Pearson, and occasional music, plant stalls or events.

Sit on the beach on a sunny day or in one of the bijou little painted sheds, with your back to the august statue of Queen Victoria, eating and drinking surprisingly good nosh prepared in the kitchen the size of a telephone box. There is a sprinkling of other bars and snackeries along the front, but this is best.
