Although not technically inside the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness, Ham Lake is a great nearby lake to "wet your paddle" in and get a first-time taste of paddling and portaging. Fish for walleye and bass and enjoy lunch at one of the four wilderness campsites on the lake.
