The Daintree Rainforest and Cape Tribulation are around two hours drive north from the house. It is worth the drive and you could stop in at Port Douglas for lunch along the way.
The Mosman Gorge is also lovely. It is located in Mossman, 15 minutes past Port Douglas.

Whilst you cannot swim in any of rivers around Cairns due to the possible presence of crocodiles, Crystal Cascades is a beautiful and safe place to swim for when you want an alternative to the pool or the beach.
