Asian King is a good Chinese restaurant that we like a lot. See the menu in the guest book. Their ingredients are fresh, and flavors are distinct without using MSG. There is good seating in the restaurant, which is just south of Moss Beach on Highway 1. Asian King also delivers to Montara.

Moss Beach Distillery is an excellent restaurant just a few miles south in Moss Beach. It has amazing views. The building has been there through its early history as a drop-off for smugglers during Prohibition, and as a bordello. It hosts a local ghost, and some excellent cooking. You can find a menu in the guest book in the apartment. To get there, go south on Highway 1 to Moss Beach, the next village. Turn right at the big sign on Hwy 1 and follow the smaller signs.

Princeton Harbor/Pillar Point Harbor is an active harbor for commercial fishing and recreational boats. The surrounding shops and restaurants are popular with locals and tourists alike. Take a walk around the harbor area to see why: craft beer at Hop Dogma Brewery (in the mall) and the Half Moon Bay Brewing Company (good food too), fresh seafood at Ketch Joanne and Barbara’s Fishtrap, fine Italian dining at Meza Luna Restaurant, Coffee and Italian pastries at Mezza Luna Café, fun gifts at Nasturtium, beer, sports and good music at Old Princeton Landing, and lots of boats along the docks. Drive south on Highway 1 past Moss Beach and the HMB airport. Turn right at the light at Capistrano Road to access the harbor and all the restaurants.

Cameron’s Pub in Half Moon Bay is another old building with a dubious past that for years has served modest fare and many beers and ales, all in an atmosphere that is quite faithful to that of an English pub. If you are a sports fan, your game will be playing in the bar or the casual dining room. (There is a more peaceful dining room too.) On Thursday nights is often a popular open mic with good amateur local musicians. Ignore the new hotel build behind the pub. To get to Cameron’s Pub, just turn, right at the big sign on Hwy 1 just South of Half Moon Bay.

Sightseeing and Local Adventures

UNUSUAL PLACES, WONDERFUL BEACHES, DRIVING THE COAST. All the beaches along the San Mateo Coastside are beautiful, and open to the public. Some state park beaches may require a daily parking fee. The most popular local beaches are Montara Beach (1.5 blocks away), Surfer Beach (just south of Princeton Harbor in El Granada, 10 minutes away), Dunes Beach, (12 minutes away), and Poplar Beach (South on Highway 1 through Half Moon Bay, 18 minutes away).
The San Gregorio General Store continues its long life as a small-town general store, but on Friday evenings and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon forward it attracts some of the best bands of the rich and diverse music community on the Coastside. The emphasis is on acoustic music in a casual environment. As an accommodation to Covid, most performances are now outside in front of the General Store. Go south on Highway 1 through some beautiful country. Turn left onto Hwy 84 for a mile or two into the Town of San Gregorio, and left again at the intersection with Stage Road. About 18 miles/30 minutes South.

This is a beautiful and dynamic beach favored by families. The waves are for experienced surfers. We and many guests are often there in the afternoon and evening to enjoy an end of the day walk and beautiful sunsets. Turn left at the bottom of our driveway on to 3rd Street and walk ½ a block West toward the ocean. Turn right down Farralone Avenue, and at the end of the block turn left on to Second Street. Be careful crossing Highway 1! There is a stairway down to Montara Beach in front of the building right across from Second Street. (There are beach blankets and a picnic basket in the closet in your apartment.) You can drive there if you want, but parking may be limited on weekends.

Surfer Beach. Surfer Beach is flatter than Montara Beach, usually more populated, and popular with less experienced surfers. There is a nice walking path adjacent to it. Drive South on Highway 1. Just after the light at Capistrano Road and Princeton Harbor (lots of restaurants, lots of boats) and after Sam’s Restaurant (the best expensive seafood) is a small parking lot on the right. Poplar Beach. This is a long beach where it is easy to be alone together or among others. Excellent for a long beach walk along the surf zone. Drive South on Highway 1. Several blocks after the big traffic light at Highway 92 and the light at Kelly Street, turn right at the light at Poplar Street. At the end of the street is a big parking lot (with a meter!) and a stairway leading down to the beach. Very accessible. Your hosts got married there many years ago. The Coastal Trail passes between the ocean and the parking lot. It provides a wonderful easy walking experience going either South or North along the clifftop. We like the trail south. It is all beautiful.

Dunes Beach is one of the northern beaches in Half Moon Bay State Beach. To reach the parking area turn onto Youngs Road just north of Half Moon Bay on Highway 1. At the end of Youngs Road there is a state park entrance station where they charge a fee for day-use parking (pay with an envelope if the shack is closed). Short steep sandy trails take you down to the beach through the dunes on the bluff. South of the beach access the beach is below sandstone bluffs and north of the access are the beach’s namesake dunes. The Half Moon Bay Coastal Trail runs north-south behind the parking lot for running, walking, and biking. This paved path extends the entire Half Moon Bay shoreline from Pillar Point to Redondo Beach. North of Dunes Beach is Roosevelt Beach with a separate parking area down a long one-lane paved road.

Trials through the redwood trees are immediately South of the town of Half Moon Bay. We recommend Burleigh Murray Ranch and especially the Purissima Creek Redwood Preserve. Both are pretty easy walks. To get there, drive South on Highway 1. After the traffic light at Poplar Street and then the half moon sculpture (on the left, where Main Street joins Highway 1) Higgins Canyon Road is on your left. Part way up Higgins Canyon Road you will see the access road for parking and the walk into Burleigh Murray Ranch. The trail is an old road that leads to a 100-year-old dairy barn. For a big redwood forest experience, go to the end of Higgins Canyon road to the amazing Purissima Creek Redwood Preserve. Parking is scarce, so go early. This lovely old fire road follows Purissima Creek through beautiful old redwoods.

Main Street in Half Moon Bay is a lovely and very walkable small town commercial street with several historical buildings. On Main Street you can find cafes, gelato, imaginative gift shops, and restaurants and wineries, as well as supplies for your horses or farm animals. There are many restaurants. We recommend Barterra Winery for a nice glass of wine at their indoor or outdoor tables. Live music on Fridays. There is a good selection of menus in the black guest book.

Driving Highway 1 Along the Coast

The San Mateo and Santa Cruz coast is one of the most beautiful and accessible in the world. Don’t miss it! Highway 1 follows the coast South to Santa Cruz, Monterey, and beyond. We (Lainey & Rick) typically drive the coast between Montara and Santa Cruz once or twice a month, just for the beauty of it. We stop for a minute or for an hour at any beach along the way or at the numerous roadside turnouts. Our favorite beaches are Pescadero Beach (either one), Bean Hollow Beach (the more northerly one, with its marvelous beach of tiny pebbles), Pomponio Beach (broad and flat, ideal for walking), and Greyhound Rock (a steep path down to a gorgeous beach). We love to watch the wind surfers at Scott’s Creek Beach (long and flat). Some fun stops as you drive South along Hwy 1 are described below. We list them in sequence heading South.
Turn left onto Hwy 84 toward the Town of San Gregorio at Stage Road, where you will find one of the most remarkable music venues in California, The San Gregorio General Store. It still looks much as it did in the 1930s, although the merchandise is updated. On weekdays it continues its long life as a small-town general store and gift shop, but on Friday evenings and on Saturdays and Sundays from noon forward it attracts some of the best bands of the rich and diverse music community on the Coastside. The emphasis is on acoustic music in a living room environment. As an accommodation to Covid, most performances are now outside in front of the General Store. About 18 miles/30 minutes South. From San Gregorio you can easily return to Hwy 1 or climb through the redwoods on Hwy 84 past La Honda (where Ken Kesey and Jerry Garcia lived) to Skyline Boulevard (Hwy 35). From that intersection (at Alice’s Restaurant), you can drive Skyline along the ridgetop North to Hwy 94 and back to Half Moon Bay, or South into the deep redwoods and Hwy 9.

The town of Pescadero has a cluster of interesting stores, and Duarte’s Tavern with its famous artichoke soup. Turn off Hwy 1 onto Pescadero Creek Road at the big sign for Pescadero. About 35 minutes/25 miles South. If you want a winding drive through redwood trees, just stay on Pescadero Creek Road up to La Honda (at Hwy 84). From there, you can take Hwy 84 back to Hwy 1 or continue over the hill to the charming (and wealthy) town of Woodside and Hwy 280, a beautiful major highway that runs between San Francisco and San Jose.

Trail Walking and Hiking

There is an extraordinary range of trail walking opportunities available from our location. Many of the best ones are right outside our door. (See Rancho Corral de Tierra below.) Some trails are wild and steep and some (See Coastal Trail listing below.) are paved and graded and easy. If you are interested in one of the many open spaces with trails beyond our immediate neighborhood, there is a guide to some of the many open space preserves on the peninsula (“over the hill,” on Highway 92 from Half Moon Bay). You can find detailed information at www://OpenSpaceTrust.org.
This is one of the most popular activities for locals and guests. The 4000 acres of Rancho Corral de Tierra is right outside our door and visible from the apartment. Trailheads are 1 ½ blocks away. The walking is mostly easy. You can have a fine day just walking the trails in the valley (what you see from the driveway) or you can undertake a more serious hike to the top of Montara Mountain. Trails are evident and there is pretty good signage. It is difficult to get disoriented because downhill is nearly always toward the ocean and the Farallone Trail (an old roadbed) that leads you back to the trailhead at Farralone Avenue and Second Street. To get to the Farallone Trail trailhead, turn left at the bottom of our driveway on to 3rd Street and walk ½ a block West toward the ocean. Turn right down Farallone Avenue, and at the end of the block just past Second Street you will see the trailhead. Locals often use the smaller tailhead ½ a block East off of 3rd Avenue. Turn right out of our driveway. After the first empty lot on the left, you will see a crumbling road leading downhill. Go straight ahead and cross the small bridge over the stream. Follow the trail up a concrete rain culvert. At the top bear left (the elementary school is above and to your right) and go straight ahead into the small pine woods that lets out onto more trials spreading out across the valley. Or at the top of the cement culvert you can go right (the school is on your left) to meet Le Conte Avenue. Across from the school is an alpaca farm. The lovely alpacas are almost always out grazing. Rick (Lainey’s husband) walks the valley trails most afternoons. He is happy to consult with you about local walking. With advanced notice, he will be happy to lead you on a walk at your own pace for a modest fee. Text him using the AirBnB app or call his mobile at 617.309.6701.
