Places to see, things to explore. See Rockport from a different view!
Type: Bird Watching, Outdoor Recreation, Parks, Walking / Hiking Halibut Point State Park is a uniquely beautiful coastal seascape. Looking seaward on a clear day, the view stretches from Crane Beach in Ipswich to Mount Agamenticus in Maine and the Isles of Shoals off the coast of New Hampshire. Formerly the Babson Farm granite quarry, the park is managed for scenic, historic and conservation purposes by the DCR and the Trustees of Reservations. An adjacent property, Sea Rocks, is owned by the Town of Rockport and open for public use. Here you can explore the park’s trails and tidepools, picnic on its rocky ledges, enjoy its sweeping views, and learn about Cape Ann’s historic granite industry. On Saturdays, from Memorial Day weekend through Columbus Day weekend, tours of the quarry are offered which include a granite-cutting demonstration. Other programs spotlight the park’s natural history, including wildflower walks and tidepool programs during the summer and seabird walks during the winter. Check the bulletin boards in the parking lot and at the Visitors Center or call the park for information on the upcoming programs. Most areas of the park and Visitors Center are universally accessible. Assisted-listening devices are available for park tours. There are no trash barrels in the park – please carry out what you carry in. The park is open year-round from sunrise to sunset for day use only. Daily Parking Fee: $5 MA Vehicle, $6 non-MA Vehicle

Tucked away on a side street in downtown Rockport is a lovely natural area called the Headlands. Sometimes called “the overlook capital of Cape Ann,” it’s just a short walk from Bearskin Neck and a great place to get away from it all. Starting at Dock Square, walk up Mt. Pleasant Street and turn left onto Atlantic Avenue. At a sharp bend in the road, you’ll see a sign saying “Way to Headlands.” Don’t worry: the trail is flat, short, and not too challenging for kids (or less-outdoorsy types). In a few minutes, you’ll find yourself ambling over the rugged glacial boulders that give Rockport its name. The reward for your hike is a rocky outcropping with fantastic views of Rockport Harbor, Sandy Bay, and the northern coastline of Cape Ann. To the south, you can see the lighthouse on Straitsmouth Island. Granite benches placed here and there allow visitors to sit and enjoy a picnic lunch or chat with a companion. From this spot, the trail continues south for a hundred yards or so, emerging on Old Garden Road. Walk over to Atlantic Avenue and retrace your steps to downtown.

Millbrook Meadow is Rockport’s “green jewel”. The Meadow and Pond belong to Rockport and offer a special place to build memories with our families and friends. For generations, Rockporters and visitors have skated on the Pond, fished in it, and brought their children and grandchildren to visit the ducks. Countless groups have visited the Meadow for picnics, fairs, festivals, and weddings. And, each year artists come to capture its unique charm on canvas, paper or film. This magical Meadow has served many… and for 78 years volunteers and limited resources have kept it beautiful for everyone. Now we have begun a major Restoration of Meadow and Pond. In Fall 2017 we plan to start, by dredging Mill Pond and rebuilding Millbrook Meadow and Brook.

It was built by Mr. Elis F. Stenman, a mechanical engineer who designed the machines that make paper clips, began building his Rockport summer home out of paper as a hobby. That was in 1922. The paper was meant to be good insulation. Eventually, not only was the house made of paper, but furniture as well, including some intricate and beautiful pieces.

Straitsmouth Island Lighthouse was built in 1835 to mark the entrance to nearby Rockport Harbor. The relatively small lighthouse is maintained by the U.S. Coast Guard but, the island itself is owned by the Massachusetts Audubon Society as a bird and wildlife sanctuary. The light is easily seen from the tip of Bearskin Neck in downtown Rockport.
