Here are some of our favorite places to eat out in Lamu, from low budget options like Seafront Cafe to places like Peponi Hotel which are great for a special evening out.
This beautiful boutique hotel is located at the doorstep of ONEWAY House, right at the seafront. Lamu House hosts a restaurant with an amazing homely atmosphere. Here you can enjoy an evening with some great cocktails, cold beers and delicious food. One of our favorite places in Town for dinner.

Lamu House
Kenyatta RoadThis beautiful boutique hotel is located at the doorstep of ONEWAY House, right at the seafront. Lamu House hosts a restaurant with an amazing homely atmosphere. Seafront Cafe is situated on the seafront road of Lamu Town and is a 5 minutes-walk away from ONEWAY House. They offer lovely Swahili cuisine including sea food, samosas and fruit shakes. This is a more local and budget-friendly option. Please be aware that like most places in Lamu this restaurant does not serve alcoholic beverages.

Corniche PathSeafront Cafe is situated on the seafront road of Lamu Town and is a 5 minutes-walk away from ONEWAY House. They offer lovely Swahili cuisine including sea food, samosas and fruit shakes. This is a more local and budget-friendly option. Please be aware that like most places in Lamu this restaurant does not serve alcoholic beverages.
Peoponi is a stunning boutique hotel in Shela. It is located at the seafront and is a great place for sundowners and dinner. The food we had at Peponi Hotel was always outstanding! Like Lamu House Hotel, it is one of the places that is great for a special evening out.

Peponi Hotel
Peoponi is a stunning boutique hotel in Shela. It is located at the seafront and is a great place for sundowners and dinner. The food we had at Peponi Hotel was always outstanding! Like Lamu House Hotel, it is one of the places that is great for a special evening out.
Dimond Beach Hotel is located on the beautiful deserted beach on Manda. The restaurant with an outside seating area and a beautiful sea view is welcoming outside guests for lunch and dinner. It is also a great place to just have drinks when visiting Manda. On Fridays there is a movie night where both locals and tourists get together to enjoy an open-air movie with some fresh Pizza from their original Pizza Oven. In case you are going to visit Diamond in the evening we would advise you to coordinate the transport back in advance as finding a boat during that time can sometimes be challenging on Manda.
Diamond Beach Village
Dimond Beach Hotel is located on the beautiful deserted beach on Manda. The restaurant with an outside seating area and a beautiful sea view is welcoming outside guests for lunch and dinner. It is also a great place to just have drinks when visiting Manda. On Fridays there is a movie night where both locals and tourists get together to enjoy an open-air movie with some fresh Pizza from their original Pizza Oven. In case you are going to visit Diamond in the evening we would advise you to coordinate the transport back in advance as finding a boat during that time can sometimes be challenging on Manda.

Shela Village is located on the south eastern corner of Lamu Island, next to a pristine sand dune and a beach stretching over 12 kms. The village is located 2.5 km from Lamu Town. At low tide Shela is a leisurely 45 minutes-walk from Lamu along the seafront. For a quick and laid-back way to Shela you can also take a boat from one of the jetties in close proximity to ONEWAY HOUSE. A great spot to enjoy a sundowner or dinner with sea view in Shela is Peponi Hotel.

Shela

Another option for grabbing drinks or having lunch dinner on Manda is the Diamond Beach Hotel ($$) mentioned above. The southern tip of Manda harbors coral cliffs and outcrops that are an amazing place for taking walks. Transportation to Manda Island is by boat.

Manda Bay Lodge
Manda Toto, just opposite Manda Bay is an unhabituated island with stunning sandy beaches. It is a beautiful sailing trip away from Lamu through the mangrove jungles and a great destination for a day safari from Lamu sailing on a dhow, where the captain and his crew will cook lunch while you can take it easy or snorkel the beautiful coral reefs (visibility is seasonal). Boat Contacts
The best way to explore this beautiful island and its surroundings is by boat. Please get in touch with us for contacts of some captains that we or our friends had very good experiences with in the past, whether it is for quick boat ride to the close by beaches of Shela or Manda or a relaxed sailing trip on one of Lamu’s traditional Dhows.
