Bar Ama is amazing for Tex Mex food and great cocktails. It's best to make a reservation, but I always get in at the communal table or at the bar for casual dining.

The Eight Bar is connected to the brand new Wholefoods dtla. They have healthy options, a good selection of beers on tap, and a decent happy hour. It's an excellent choice for casual dining, and the outside patio is pretty quiet.

Dtla hot spot! It's a little overpriced, but I wanted to mention it because of the atmosphere and ability to impress. I personally like to go there for double dates - their small plates are great to share with a small group. Request the outdoor patio.

$$$$ Redbird is one of the best restaurants I've tried downtown LA. Excellent for celebrations or anniversaries. Beautifully decorated and has a dress code. Check out Yelp for more photos of this gorgeous restaurant.

This is THE SPOT for drinks and appetizers at sunset. You can see the entire city on this rooftop. Once you find the small entrance, take the elevators up to the top floor, walk across the hall and take another set of elevators to the restaurant. Try a french inspired cocktail and the truffle fries.

Zine Cafe is a coffee place, bakery, mini store, and modern industrial restaurant all in one. Go for breakfast and mimosas and bring your sunglasses. Pets welcome too.

The Upstairs Bar at the Ace Hotel is my favorite rooftop. For a trendy and hip place, the drinks are still affordable and the staff are incredibly nice. It's relaxing and quiet before sunset, and a place to 'go and be seen' after 9pm. Be prepared to wait in line at night on the weekends.

Thank goodness dtla has a whole foods now. It's brand new and has the essentials. I personally think it's within walking distance, but if you don't know the area it may be easier to drive. They validate parking for 90 min.
