The largest of several hundred ancient cisterns that lay beneath Istanbul. The entrance is just across the street from the Hagia Sophia. It is a wonderfully cool escape on a hot summer day. Head to the back corner to see the Medusa column. If the lineup is long, you can head over a few blocks to the lesser known but very beautiful Serefiye Cistern.

Built in 537 as a church, it became a mosque after the fall of Constantinople. In 1935 it became a museum and in July 2020 it once again became a mosque, which means you can visit it for free outside of prayer time. This nearly 1500 year old building is remarkable and is a must visit for anyone coming to Istanbul.

In a city filled with amazing mosques, this might be the most beautiful. Commissioned by Suleiman the Magnificent, it was designed by the imperial architect Mimar Sinan, whose tomb is just outside the grounds. If you are able to wake up early, this is the perfect place to watch the sunrise.
