The 10.45am Sunday service is a magical experience among the rolling hills and wildflowers, and on 30 June the monastery celebrates the feast of the 12 Apostles. Some nine nuns and a priest reside here.

Ride with us on Europe’s last industrial forest railway, with the old Mocanita, a century old steam locomotive, in some of the Carpathian’s wildest corners. The journey will also take us to Maramures, probably Romania’s most archaic and picturesque region, famous for it’s wooden culture and warm, welcoming people.
The Mocăniţa of the Vaser Valley Built in the 1920s, after the first World War the forest railway was fit into the mountain rail system that was built around the country at that time. In the late 80s, in Romania there were about 6.000 km of narrow railway. After 1990, most of these railways were destroyed, with few exceptions. One of these exceptions is the forest track from the Vaser Valley. The train hasn’t stopped working, being used in logging in northern Maramures. Since the year 2000, with help from the Swiss foundation Hilfe für die Wasserthalbahn, trains have been also used to transport tourists. This railway is unique in Europe because of its steam locomotives, which drive small wagons into remote areas, completely isolated from any modern life. Get ready for a unique adventure in a landscape of rare beauty, where time seems to have stood still.

A prison for political prisoners right up to 1974 has reopened as the Memorial Museum to the Victims of Communism and to the Resistance. Photographs and objects with short descriptions are displayed in more than 50 of the torture chambers and cells on two levels. Most everything is in Romanian, but a comprehensive booklet allows you to follow along in English and other languages.
In May 1947, the communist regime slaughtered, imprisoned and tortured thousands of Romanians who could (or might) oppose the new leadership. While many leading prewar figures were sent to hard-labour camps, the regime’s most feared intellectual opponents were held in Sighet’s maximum-security prison. Between 1948 and 1955 more than 180 members of Romania’s academic and government elite as well as priests and bishops were imprisoned here, and some 53 died.
The heart-rending bronze statues in the courtyard, shielding themselves and covering their mouths in horror, recall those who died. Many of these victims are buried in the Paupers' Cemetery some 2.5km west of the centre.

The museum traces Wiesel's life and work and examines the history of the Jews and Jewish culture in Maramureş. There's a monument to the victims of the Holocaust along Str Gheorghe Doja.
