Food scene
Having the opportunity to enjoy authentic Puerto Rican food is a highlight of many visitors' experiences of the island. The vibrancy of Puerto Rican culture comes alive in its dishes, a celebration of flavors that visitors have the opportunity to indulge in. Some of the favorites are mofongo, tostones, pasteles, arroz con gandules, tembleque and the famous "frituras".
Alcapurrias are a fritter shaped like a torpedo, made from shredded root vegetables like yuca and yautía, stuffed with a choice of meat, and fried. Deep-fried fritters normally found in open-air, beachside restaurants that pair beautifully with a cold beer. These are usually stuffed with ground beef, crab meat, chicken, fish, octopus, conch, or other types of seafood. There are a variety of different fritters you will find in Puerto Rico.
Empanadillas are a larger version of empanadas, also stuffed with a choice of meat and fried. There’s also a popular pizza version filled with melted mozzarella cheese and tomato sauce.
Puerto Rican arepas are flour based, sometimes made with coconut for a slightly sweet flavor, fried and then stuffed, usually with seafood.
Bacalaítos are not stuffed, just a simple batter of flour and water with chunks of salted cod and parsley, deep fried into what look like giant corn flakes.
Within walking distance you have Bebo's Cafe for the best puertorican food in the area. While in Puerto Rico it is a must to try Mofongo, which is smashed plantains, either with meat or seafood. In case of choosing the meat I would recommend trying the garlic sauce. In case you decide for seafood, then should be creole sauce. Old San Juan has strict measures to maintain the same structures as it used to be centuries ago. While the Spanish where in Puerto Rico they build a gigantic wall that surrounded the town, nowadays you can still see the structure while walking through Paseo la Princesa. During this walk you will be able to see the San Juan Gate, which was back in the day the only entrance and exit from Old San Juan, as it was completely surrounded by the majestic wall.

Several ecotourism companies lead caving, cave tubing, rappelling, hiking, and rock-climbing tours in this area, among them Aventuras Tierra Adentro, Tanama River Adventure, Tanama Tours, Cacique EcoAdventures, and others. All will require participants to be in excellent physical condition, but level of difficulty and type of activities varies according to the operator and the tour you choose.
Right on the roaring Atlantic coast is Cueva del Indio, or Indian Cave, named after the indigenous hieroglyphs found carved into the rocks. The entrance fee is $5 and will give you access to impressive cliffs, views of crashing waves, and a natural bridge formed from rocks. Prior to Hurricane María there was a ladder leading down to the cave which is now gone. Experienced climbers can still make the descent down to the cave where there are rock carvings made by the Taínos, the tribe that lived on the island before the arrival of Columbus and the Spanish.
Note: Parque Nacional de las Cavernas del Rio Camuy, which offers access to the largest cave network in the Western hemisphere, is currently closed. A potential reopening date has not been set. However, there are many other exciting and beautiful caves to visit throughout the island.

Right on the roaring Atlantic coast is Cueva del Indio, or Indian Cave, named after the indigenous hieroglyphs found carved into the rocks. The entrance fee is $5 and will give you access to impressive cliffs, views of crashing waves, and a natural bridge formed from rocks. Prior to Hurricane María there was a ladder leading down to the cave which is now gone. Experienced climbers can still make the descent down to the cave where there are rock carvings made by the Taínos, the tribe that lived on the island before the arrival of Columbus and the Spanish.
Note: Parque Nacional de las Cavernas del Rio Camuy, which offers access to the largest cave network in the Western hemisphere, is currently closed. A potential reopening date has not been set. However, there are many other exciting and beautiful caves to visit throughout the island.
