Sightseeing

The major landmarks of the island are The Naval High School, Papaz Okulu or Hagia Triada Seminary, Aya Nikola Church, Terki Dünya Manastırı and Ismet Inönü House.
A special permission is required to enter the premises. I suggest you go there on a Sunday. If you are lucky, the monks will let you in to visit the gardens. You can enjoy stunning views from the top of the hill.

Deniz Lisesi serves as the military high school training naval cadets for the Turkish Naval Academy. Established in 1773, it is one of the oldest Turkish high schools in Istanbul. Normally, the guards will not allow you to take pictures. Nevertheless, there is a ferry terminal just nearby, and you can take photos of the historic school buildings from there when arriving at the island.

Beaches

Amongst the beaches of Heybeli my favourites are Çam Limanı and Değirmen Burnu. Both can be visited during the Grand Tour (Büyük Tur) which you can make either on foot or on a horse carriage (fayton).
Çam Limanı is the most beautiful bay on Heybeli. You can visit it while making the Grand Tour. The beach will be open during the summer season.

Best place for a picnic or an evening walk. There is also a beach. The place is named after an old windmill, which is found at the tip facing Burgaz Ada. Go on a weekday, or if at the weekend in the morning hours, to avoid the crowds. There will be an entrance fee during day time.

A good base for exploring the city

Less than an hour from the centre of Istanbul, Heybeli is the second largest of the Princes Islands, with lovely walks and retreats, and a naval academy that brings a certain purpose to the place. The pace of life is measured by horse-drawn phaeton, while the handsome clapboard houses, pine woods, and pure air give the island a truly rural feel. Heybeli makes a good base for exploring the city.
