A beautiful old pub in Saffron Walden with (usually!) very nice food. A super spot for lunch, very close to Fry Gallery and Bridge End Gardens, which we also recommend.

Held on Tuesdays and Saturdays, this is a proper market. Lots of useful stalls-bakers, cheesemongers, fishmonger, fruit and veg-- but also fun foodie and non-foodie things. Plenty to eat at the market as well, from oysters to sausages!

Saffron Walden Market
Held on Tuesdays and Saturdays, this is a proper market. Lots of useful stalls-bakers, cheesemongers, fishmonger, fruit and veg-- but also fun foodie and non-foodie things. Plenty to eat at the market as well, from oysters to sausages!
The Plough is a 10 minute walk through the village. It has an American-diner vibe but is in an old beamed pub.

Excellent Italian food but also pub classics. Good beer and lovely service. Gets very busy, so worth booking, especially in the evening. You can walk to Great Sampford from Radwinter along the river, it will take a bit more than an hour.

Cambridge is close but Saffron Walden is closer! An old market town with a good collection of things to do and places to eat.
A lovely little art gallery highlighting a world-class collection of mid 20C local artists, including Eric Ravilious and Edward Bawden. Open April-October. Please check web-site for opening times

An early 19C garden gifted to Saffron Walden which includes a sunken parterre, walled garden, hedge maze and cricket grounds. Easy to combine with a trip to the Fry Gallery and a mooch around Saffron Walden.

This is one of the earliest turf labyrinths in England. It is on the common in the centre of town.

Roman tumuli about 4 miles from the house. Perfect day out to walk around this group of Roman burial mounds and then have lunch at the nearby pub, the Three Hills. Bartlow village and church are also pleasant to walk around.

We have a cinema in the local high school! It has most of the usual blockbusters but also international and art-house films, usually on Monday nights. Do check their web-site for what's on.

A modern and much acclaimed concert space. Home to Britten Sinfonia and the London Philharmonic Orchestra. As well as a world-class classical concerts, opera and dance, there are folk and jazz nights with street-food. Please look at their web-site for events.
