For most travelers, touring the Vatican is a one-day trip, and that’s exactly what we suggest, using a whole day for it. In addition, we highly recommend signing on to a good guided tour to the Vatican. This will not only help you navigate the maze of the Vatican Museums (and make sure you don’t miss any of the truly important stuff), but also help you understand the context of what you’re seeing as well.

Its collections are housed in a magnificent 17th-century villa, offering a compact course in the Italian aesthetic. In just 20 rooms, you will be exposed to antiquities, the Renaissance and the beginnings of the baroque art. Visits to the Galleria (situated in the northeast corner of the sprawling Villa Borghese park) are made by reservation.

If you are in Rome, you cannot waste your luck. Don’t hesitate to throw a coin into the famous Trevi fountain to realize a little wish. Planned by the architect Nicolò Salvi, this fountain receives the water from the aqueduct “Vergine” (lit. Virgin).

Unveiled in the 1st Century A.C., this structure was named “Colosseum” because of its colossal statue, representing the emperor Nero, which was near the amphitheater. The Romans had fun watching the gladiators wrestle with wild animals or assisting at spectacular simulations of naval battles.

The Roman Forum was an ancient showpiece center, a grandiose district of marble-clad temples, beautiful basilicas and vibrant public spaces. Today, its impressive but badly labelled ruins, give some hint on how it was at the time. You just need to use a little bit of your imagination to picture it as it once was.

Situated between the Roman Forum and the “Circo Massimo”, the Palatino (Palatine Hill) was and one of Roman’s most exclusive neighborhoods. It was here that Romulus supposedly founded the city in 752 B.C. and where emperors used to live in an unabashed luxury.

It’s one of the most characteristic areas of the city, that keeps the original medieval asset, with little streets paved with cobbles (called “sampietrini”) and medieval houses. During the imperial period, this was the area of the patrician aristocracy (for example there was Julius Caesar’s Villa).

Every Italian city has an outdoor market where you can buy foodstuffs. This one is one of the most ancient and beautiful markets in Italy. Taking place in a really large “piazza”, we recommend it also for just a quick look.
