Close by the house you’ll find one of the cultural rambling paths, Kultehamn. A four kilometer walk in the forest along a historic trail painting the picture of life in the late 19th, early 20th century. Kultehamn is one of five rambling paths with informational signs telling the history of Orust along the way. The other four are; Svens altare, Husebyleden, Kråksunds gap and Björnsundskanalen. On these trails you pass remnants of cottages from the 1800 giving you a vivid picture of life and island history. https://www.orust.se/amnesomrade/upplevaochgora/idrottmotionochfriluftsliv/vandringsleder

One of the most famous smaller islands in the surroundings is Kärringön, a picturesque small fishing community, accessible only by boat from Tuvesvik. Completely car-free and beautiful to walk around with small restaurants and cafés down by the harbour.

Stillingsön is an old seaside resort interesting to go for a study of the old wooden house architecture, all painted in the same white/ocher. The is an old bath, a little unclear if it is for public use or not.

Swimming

If you feel like a change of scenery you can find beaches all over the island and you are allowed to go swimming in most places due to the “Right of Public Access” as long as you don’t litter, disturb or destroy. Among the public beaches we like the one in Mollösund the best. Great for both adults and kids, also the smallest ones. Following this link you’ll find a map of the beaches: https://www.havochvatten.se/hav/fiske--fritid/badvatten.html

The local grocery shop in Svanesund is not the best place to go for fresh fish and sea food. In the bigger community Stenugnsund on the mainland you’ll find fishing stands outside the bigger food shops selling a wide variety of fresh fish delivered mainly by the local fishermen. If you are out and about discovering the island, take the chance of buying some fish. Most of the small fishing communities on the island sell fresh fish for the day. ORUST FISK (Orust Fish) In the harbour of Stocken, western Orust, you’ll find Orust Fisk open during spring/summer season. During summer up until mid august they sell everything you can wish for from the Swedish sea fauna as well as their homemade herring, a typical Swedish dish. When it closes for the season, it is only open Saturdays for pre-ordered pick-ups. Facebook @orustfisk for opening hours. Phone: 0304-51171, mobile: 0722-511719 E-mail: info@orustfisk.se

This is not the cheapest of places but you can get a freshly made “fika” with a beautiful sea view and bring some oven warm bread back home. If you are up for doing something else they also give short day/evening courses on sourdough.

CHILDREN

Except for a lot of excellent public beaches playgrounds are scarce on Orust. If you are looking for something else for the kids not involving water we have tried to gather a few tips for you.

A bit of a drive away, in Hunnebostrand you’ll find Norden’s Ark, a zoo for endangered animals. About 100 species include both exotic and Nordic animals. Its farm has native animals, hay bale-jumping and other activities. Not always agreeing with the idea of a zoo, this is one of the better one.

This is a place focusing on showing the species of the surrounding sea hiding animals you never would expect. An exciting excursion on a rainy day. Havets Hus also arranges at least one Seal Safari a day during the whole summer. Every ride lasting for 1,5 hour. The guided tour is in Swedish but ask for english translation and you will get it in most cases.

Sundsby Säteri is a historic estate with a café serving home made bread and cakes. It's also the starting point to several rambling paths in fantastic surroundings. Our favorite path is Sundsbyleden of 4,3 km with a short visit to the caves. You can chose short and easy or longer and harder, there are several choices.

The church is actually a cave formed by fallen stone blocks. Historically used as a place for preaching. If you want to make it through the entire circuit you will need to be small, nimble and in relatively good shape, otherwise it is a nice walk in beautiful scenery! The route is not marked but you park by the Torp church. Walk the road leading down the hill and along the cemetery to a gate into a field. Pass through the gate (close it after you!!) and follow along the right side of the field and continue along a tractor road beside an old stone fence. If you come to a barbed wire fence you have come too far. You should look for some red ribbons in the trees between the tractor road and the cliff above. These ribbons lead the way to the opening in the blocks. Keep moving away from the church when inside and follow along within ups and downs with some light climbing and dropping down. Exhilarating and worth the excursion! You can also find a geocache on the inside!
