Food scene

This is probably our favourite pub in the country and we are blessed to have it so close. Nestled in the peaceful Lickle Valley, surrounded by farm land and fells the Blacksmiths Arms has been providing a warm welcome for nearly 300 years. Today, it is run by Sophie and Michael who continue to offer a relaxed and warm welcome to this unique Lakeland Pub. They believe that the historic interior of the pub, its location, its reputation for good food and drink and its place in the local community make the Blacksmiths Arms a special place to visit and we definitely agree.

One of the reasons we love the Western Fells of the Lake District so much is that they receive a fraction of the visitors that Central Fells do, especially in the summer. At the heart of the area is the spectacular Duddon valley with plenty of walks, swimming and a pub for lunch.

This is one of favourite houses in the Lake District and in the summer there is often a travelling theatre in the field in front of the house which is great fun with a picnic. Brantwood’s historical Lakeland estate comprises 250 acres, with remarkable gardens created by John Ruskin, his cousin Joan Severn and head gardener Sally Beamish. Beautiful in all seasons with spectacular views across Coniston water to the fells. At the estate’s heart are eight unique gardens which continue the many radical experiments in land management and horticulture which Ruskin began. Broadly divided into three areas – the northern and southern gardens which involve some walking uphill, and the lower gardens which are suitable for all. East of Lake, Coniston LA21 8AD, Tel: 015394 41396, https://www.brantwood.org.uk/

This famous village lies at the centre of the Lake District and well worth a visit in its own right. Hawkshead is an ancient township that has flourished since Norse times, belonging to Furness Abbey until the 12th Century. The monks owned Hawkshead Hall, just outside the village, of which the National Trust owned Hawkshead Courthouse is all that remains. After the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537, Hawkshead grew as a market town, with many buildings dating from the 17th Century.

My husband grew up on a farm just outside this ancient Cumbrian village and his grandfather was vicar at the Cartmel Priory. This is an excellent place to visit if you wish to visit the medieval priory, go racing, buy the famous sticky toffee pudding or eat at the Michelin starred restaurants. It is a 40 minute drive from the house.

This is a must for children and we have many fond memories here. In addition to the railway, walk up to the Stanley Ghyll waterfalls or have lunch at the Brook House Inn. Drive over Birker Fell or over Hardnott Pass to visit the Roman fort. The Ravenglass & Eskdale Railway is one of the oldest and longest narrow gauge railways in England, known affectionately as La’al Ratty meaning “little railway“ in old Cumbrian dialect. The line is seven miles long with a journey time of 40 minutes each way offering spectacular views over the estuaries and countryside with England’s highest mountains in the distance. There are great walks between and from the seven intermediate request stops.

Barrow in Furness was once the largest steelworks in the World and still continues to build submarines for the Royal Navy. Most of its exhibits in the museum concern the history of the town, focusing on the shipbuilding industry at VSEL, the steelworks industry, the Furness Railway and the World War II bombings of the town.
