Food Scene

There are a few really good restaurants in Orpington. We have highlighted some of our favourites. All are walking distance from the flat, with the exception of The Rising Sun and Chapter One that are minutes away by car or public transport. The Dim Sum restaurant is in central London, near Leceister Square/Charing Cross, and well worth a visit if you love Dim Sum.
A college restaurant, so always book in advance as it is only open some days. A bit hit and miss, but certainly an interesting place to go .... you are also supporting the education of the next generation of restuarant staff, so always leave feedback in a positive manner, of course.

Family run coffe shop with wonderful light snacks and lunches. Owner always provides a high standard - he really does care.

This is an amazing Sushi bar !!! Great for take-aways, but also has seating for around 8 people. If you love Sushi. we do recommend you book, and eat in as they often give little extras during the meal. They sell beer and saki; you have to bring your own wine. Good news is there is a Sainsbury across the road, so you can get a nice bottle of wine with your meal. We think this is reasonably priced, and some of the best sushi you will get anywhere. The owner/head chef heads off to Billingsgate fish market every morning. It is in Petts Wood, which is one stop from Orpington by train.

If you fancy a special meal at a Michelin Star restaurant, this is the place to visit. Booking is a must. We haven't been for a while, but we always felt it was good value for money. Yes expensive, but not as expensive as other Michelin Star'd restaurants. We also recommend getting a taxi there, and back. The only alternative is to get a bus, or drive.

This is the best, caffe in Orpington. If you are new to the UK, you must have at least one full English breakfast for the full UK experience. This is the place to have that. They also have a very good and extensive lunch menu.

Less than an hour, by train to a piece of English history. The town, Battle is the site of the famous Battle of Hastings when William the Conqueror beat King Harold. William then consolidated his victory by building many famous castles, such as the Tower of London and Dover castle. You can then continue on, by train, to Hastings; a seaside town. Fair warning, the town is a little tired.

Sightseeing

Orpington is a great location to catch the train into central London or out to the Kentish coast.
Well worth a visit if you have time. Only a few minutes away by train. You will explore caves carved out of salt (I think) from pre-Roman, Roman and more modern times in the 2nd world war. I beleive a local Dungeons and Dragons group meet up every Sunday to fight elves and goblins.

Down House is a site of outstanding international significance. Here the famous scientist Charles Darwin lived with his family for forty years and worked on his revolutionary theories. About 12 minutes drive away.

This is a really interesting hidden little museum, next door to London Bridge, train station, so really easy to get to from the Apartment. A great day out in the immediate area would include Borough Market, the Shard and why not walk long the Thames to Waterloo bridge passing the Clink Street old gaol, and a replica of the Golden Hind, captained by Sir Francis Drake who saved England by beating off the Spanish Armada (with a little bit of help from the weather)

This is a MUST !!! Foodie heaven. A great place to buy artisan foods. Many little restaurants and stalls serving prepared food. When in season, the Oysters are superb. Just a short walk from London Bridge train station.

A short walk from London Bridge train station, across London Bridge itself. This tower marks the spot where the great fire of London started in a bakers oven. There are 311 steps to the top, and you get a certificate to prove you made it.

This is our favourite museum in London, home of the rosetta stone, the Elgin marbles and a great Egyptian collection. The roof is a wonder, very similar to the new roof at Kings Cross railway station.

Loads of boutique shops, market stalls, bars cafes and restaurants, a short walk from Charing Cross station. Often many street entertainers. Jo particularly likes the jewellery at Les Nereides. If we want to indulge ourselves with coffee and a macaron, head over to Laduree. Ask for a table outside, and you can watch the street entertainers in the square.

Dover is a great place to visit if you like castles and chalk cliffs. About one and a half hours by train from Orpington The castle is a bit of a walk up the hill, and if the weather permits, you should be able to see France. If are more adventurous, walk along the cliff behind the main port along Eastcliffe road/Athol terrance to St Margarets past a lighthouse, or head along the Saxon shore way to Folkestone passing an old victorian fort <- this is amazing and well off the normal tourist track, a knights templar church (foundations only). The walk to folkestone is amazing if a little tiring -- about 10 miles, either along the shore (watch out for the tide) or on top of the cliff. If you do decide to do this walk, you can get the train back to Orpington from Folkestone.

Parks & Nature

Explore Knole Park, Kent's last medieval deer park at the National Trust's Knole in Sevenoaks. Wonderful walks, a great cafe, and a historic house to explore ... and all within a park full of deers. About 25 minutes drive away, or a short train ride with a robust walk up the hill.

Entertainment & Activities

A few fun things to do in and around Orpington .... but we also recommend checking out thehiddencity.com if you want a fun tour around parts of London you would never normally see -- we haven't done it yet, but a friend says the Enchanted Mirror challenge is awesome.

Favourite Wine Bars/Pubs

There are a couple of wine bars that you would not normally see, that we love in London, close to Charing Cross station as well as one in Petts Wood.
Down a spiral stair case into a cave like wine bar. Can get very busy after work, but worth a visit. Excellent selection of Cheese, and a very extensive wine list.

A really interesting, tiny bar in Petts Wood. Serves a large selection of draft beer and ciders. I believe it was setup by ex Bankers who wanted a change of pace.
