Food Scene

Nestled amongst fruit trees, herb bushes and shrubs, Punnet Eatery is a home away from home for frequent visitors thanks to its homely interior, epic kids playground and family-run ethos. Plenty of dairy-free, gluten-free and vegan options grace the menu here, but you’re likely to be so wowed by the descriptions that it’ll be the last thing you notice. With an impressive breakfast menu served all day, try the coconut and mango sago for something a little different, although it would be rude to turn down Punnet’s own strawberry waffles too. Whether you’re coming for an ice cream, on a gift-buying escapade for a friend, or you’re simply passing through for a coffee before the weekend market, Punnet oozes the kind of charm that makes it impossible not to come back time and time again.

A true oasis tucked in to the middle of an unassuming neighbourhood shopping centre, Two Birds is a diamond in the rough for those wanting healthy, wholesome meal options on the go. Users of Raglan Roast beans, Two Birds doesn’t mind which way you have it, and is one of a very few places not to charge you extra for alternative milks – soy, almond, rice or coconut, you could mix it up each time you visit! All about giving customers a quality lunch option, choose from a menu that shouts wholesome – bowls of beans, rice, salsa and veges for the savoury eaters (with free range meat if you’re interested) or Pinterest worthy smoothie bowls for early morning visitors, to name but a few. The cabinet out front is stacked with raw, gluten free and vegan slices which make any earlier thoughts about skipping to the dairy for a chocolate bar totally redundant. Big communal tables inside make it an easy spot to bring the whole work team, although the spacious sunny courtyard is a popular spot on a good day too. Pots of greenery hanging from the roof and a garden abundant with plants give a meal out here the feel like your miles away from busy Hamilton town. Helping with the overall vibe are the young laid-back staff who emit the kind of happy, healthy ethos that Two Birds is so big on. A place where the food really does the talking, come to Two Birds for a beautifully prepared lunch or breakfast that’ll fuel you for the rest of the day and beyond.

GGs is a haven of good vibes serving coffee and breakfast from the sixth ‘shed’ of Lovegrove Lane, a block of owner operator businesses off Grey Street in East Hamilton. This coffee oasis is light and sunny, decorated with 70s nick nacks that will leave you reminiscing over your family bach. Well known for their chocolate lamingtons and delicious savoury scones (think beetroot, fennel and feta or rosemary and feta), GGs have also begun a toastie menu, serving up a variety of tasty combos like spicy bacon, kimchi, or Boston bean and cheese. House made soups are also a big seller from the little café, with hungry customers lining up for the French onion, broad bean and pea, or honey roasted parsnip versions. Well on their way to becoming a breakfast retreat for the hungry Hamiltonian, GG’s is big on having vegan options for the everyday diner too, and can make most of their meals to suit. Pyrony Pies and their very own vegan ginger loaf two things the cruelty-free eaters sure to enjoy. What began as donuts and coffee has quickly developed into a full, thriving cafe that feels like a beach holiday. GGs serves Rocket coffee, Forage & Bloom tea, and Hakanoa Ginger. Karma Cola, Almightly juice, and Höpt soda are also well stocked in the fridge, or give the ‘Hot Malt and Maple’ a try to warm up a winter day. They do pour overs and chemex for the coffee connoisseur, and are also one of the very few establishments in Hamilton that offer free, functional wifi. There are a number of cosy tables inside as well as a sunny outdoor area at the front where large groups often congregate over Vitamin C and coffee. So grab the bros and come down to GGs.

Sometimes after a busy week at work, the last thing you feel like doing is facing the city again for an evening meal or after hours drink. However, the suburbs of East Hamilton now have a hub of their own. Hayes Common is bringing delicious, wholefood cuisine right to the neighbourhood with flair, style and good taste.

Jump straight into a Vietnamese inspired eatery on Hamilton’s main street in the form of Banh Mi Caphe. Come evening time the music is loud, the tables are packed and the atmosphere is buzzing. Appealing to young and old, dates, groups and solo eaters, tables and brightly coloured stools are packed close together, transporting you straight to street side in South East Asia. A licenced restaurant, there’s beer and wine and a seductive sounding cocktail list, or house made smoothies and sodas. Steaming, vibrant plates of food piled high are delivered quickly by easy-going staff, and made for sharing - you’ll need to guard your portion carefully if you wish to have it all to yourself. Try the famous Vietnamese baguette with pork, chicken, beef or tofu, or dig into the delicious green papaya salad with prawns and finish it off with spring rolls or save room for the sweets at the end. Recipes have been carefully passed down from generation to generation, all the way from Can Tho to Waikato, and the fresh, healthy and truly tasty dishes are worth traveling for.

There’s standing room only at this popular bakery, where bread and sweets fly out the door from 7:30am onwards. Spice up your usual bakery experience with creative takes on old classics. A busy coffee machine sees the caffeine-needy through the day, or choose an alternative from the cold drinks fridge. Baked onsite, the bread is worth trekking over town for, and only those in quick will get their hands on the town-famous Volare grain bread; latecomers will have to settle with the next best - ciabatta, turkish loaves or brioche bread to name a few. The cabinet stocks some of the aforementioned bread in the form of chunky and wholesome sandwiches, and sweet eaters will be tempted by some of the best cookies in town, crispy danishes or even Volare’s very own take on a cronut. Well-loved by locals, this expert bakery gives back to it’s community by donating excess food to Kaivolution - a food rescue service passing on excess to those who need it most.

Impressive for its sheer array of books, as well as clever, quirky design, Browsers is a book lover’s paradise. Quality secondhand books adorn the shelves, and old singer sewing machines, typewriters and comfy leather chairs lend themselves to the somewhat nostalgic atmosphere. The books feel well-loved and well-thumbed, and the head high bookshelves will keep you entertained for hours. A particularly impressive display of craftsmanship is the towering bookcase located right next to the entrance, where the mystery remains as to what would happen if someone fancied a novel right at the top. A considerable Maori and New Zealand section lends plenty of literature to our history, while the colourful kids section comes complete with a small cubby area perfect for tucking away and losing yourself in a fictional world for a while. Sheet music is a nice touch to a bookstore that’s both modern and historic, and knowledgeable staff seem to have the whereabouts of every novel perfectly mapped out in their head.
