Quaint little coffee shop and eaterie in the heart of downtown Abilene! Sandwiches, scones, etc. A great place to sit and chat over coffee or a light lunch. I've had the turkey bacon sandwich and the chicken salad sandwich. Both are very good! I'd highly recommend their French Onion soup for your side. Open morning through mid afternoon. (Until 3 pm) Closed Sunday and Monday.

Locally known for a great breakfast! (They have a hearty lunch menu, too.) A lot of locals eat here often. From breakfast to burgers, the food is always good. Very clean, the decor reminds you of a small town diner or restaurant. Full bar. South edge of downtown Abilene. They are closed one day a week (Maybe Monday?) and are open for breakfast and lunch. (No dinner.)

Another top pick! Burgers, Steaks, Salads. Full bar service. Sports themed grill-type restaurant with ball games playing on tvs---but not loud. Food is good and they usually have a crowd. My favorite is the Southwest Chicken Salad. Closed Sunday evenings and Mondays. (Lots of seating, so if the parking lot is full, there’s still a good chance that there is a table available.)

Another one of our favorites! Restaurant/Grill/Bar-- with sports memorabilia mainly on one side of the restaurant and large Eisenhower pictures featured in the other part of the restaurant. (Ike played baseball, football, and golf!) Sometimes the ballgames/tvs are a little too loud for me (mostly on the bar side) , so if you are looking for quiet, you might want to save this place for another time or ask to be seated not in the bar area. Full bar service. Open fairly late. They usually have trivia night on Wednesdays and have added live music on Friday nights.

CURRENTLY CLOSED for an extensive remodel! They have daily specials that tend to be "comfort food" (Roast beef w/mashed potatoes; baked steak, etc.) but also have other offerings, such as Fried Shrimp, Steaks. Not very far from the cabin, it's an old farmhouse atop a small hill. Closed Mondays.

Arts & Culture

Wonderful campus which includes the Museum, Presidential Library, Ike's Boyhood Home (still in the exact place where he grew up), Place of Meditation Chapel-- that is his final resting place (along with his wife, Mamie, and infant son), and Gift Shop. The gift shop has some nice "coffee table" books that you might want to have for a souvenir of your visit. Abilene is lucky to have the Eisenhower Center honoring Dwight D. "Ike" Eisenhower, our 34th President of the United States. See this page for schedule of events: https://www.facebook.com/pg/IkeLibrary/events/

Museum-both indoors and outdoors. Learn about the Chisholm trail cattle drives that brought thousands of longhorns up from Texas--along with their cowboys who upon their arrival gave this town quite a wild and woolly reputation. Ride the antique carousel built by C.W. Parker, and learn about Abilene's C.L. Brown's contribution to the telephone industry and Sprint. Many artifacts and displays showcasing everyday life of the pioneers. A gem of a museum. Every year in October, they have a festival with many live demonstrations. As shown in the pictures, many children experience life of days gone by, when they attend “Pioneer Camp” in the summer. These boots are placed around town and each one is hand painted by a different local person. They depict events/people that are part of Abilene’s heritage. They would be great for photo ops. There is a map in these pictures to help you find them. There are also painted murals around town. I believe there are paper maps of the murals at The Little Ike Park.

Parks & Nature

You must see this flower garden (in our park) if it is in season! Joy plans a new design each year. She and her staff of 2-3 people start the plants indoors during the winter and then plant them outdoors in the Spring, all around the fountain and grounds---creating a flowering showcase. Curbside parking, just a few steps from the gardens. Spend 20 minutes or 2 hours there, it's just a relaxing place! (Occasionally used for weddings.) Gazebos, benches, and a walking path are there so you can take in and just enjoy all this beauty. Joy and staff also take care of plantings in the other parks around town. Beautiful! (The park also has play equipment and a nice swimming pool.)

This is a great park if you like to take long walks, jogs, or bask in the tranquil beauty of nature. It is owned and maintained by the Brown Memorial Foundation. (Google C.L. Brown, an early citizen who built a power plant on the Smoky Hill River, started United Utilities, created a large park complete with lake, boats, horseback riding, etc. that people visited from near and far). After hard times and stock market crash, etc. some of that could not be sustained, but Brown's Park is still home to a beautiful park and creek, a Boy Scout Camp, and large home for older citizens. Located south of town.

Old Abilene Town was a busy tourist attraction in the 60’s. However, it fell into disrepair and was closed. Over the past few years, a group of volunteers have been working hard to bring back it’s glory. Mainly funded by generous local donors, it is a work in progress and run as a non-profit organization. Volunteers have repaired and repainted the buildings, created a small general store, and reopened the saloon. The biggest event hosted by Abilene is “Chisholm Trail Days,” held annually on Labor Day weekend. Throughout the summer, can-can girls and gunfighters perform each weekend starting on Memorial weekend. Located next to the Smoky Valley Train.

Everyone loves chocolate and there is plenty here! Although you can't take a tour of the factory due to health regulations, you can visit the candy store for some regular and sugar-free candy. My favorite part is the back room where they sell candy from previous holidays (but it's still good!!!) at deeply discounted prices. It also keeps well in the freezer. I hear their ice cream is good, although I've never had it.

But also, their parking lot is the site of the The FARMERS' MARKET! (201 NW 2nd) Locals bring their homegrown produce, fresh breads, pies, cheese, and other specialty items to sell. Although this is a small market, compared to those in a bigger city--I always find several delicious items there! Market season runs from the end of May through October, on Wednesday evenings from 4-7 p.m.; Saturday 7-11 a.m. Go to this website and click the calendar link for current events around town http://www.abilenecityhall.com/index.aspx?NID=160
The store owner, Amy, would love to have you stop in and play with the toys! Located in the heart of downtown Abilene, Kansas, at 109 NW 3rd Street, near the corner of 3rd and Buckeye. Look for the storefront decorated with hanging paper lanterns and lots of little lights. (Their other store is in Lindsborg, KS) Nice selection for all ages....toys, games, puzzles, books, inspirational items, stuffed animals, etc. I need to double check the hours, but I know the Abilene store is open Tuesdays and Fridays, and possibly more. (Hours are posted in their window)

THE GREENHOUSE. Wow!!! When I walked into this place I was amazed! From the outside, you would not expect this. You'll step into a "jungle" of plants, mixed with fun/funky art! When you enter, it's obvious that this is not your typical greenhouse. It has a great story of how it came to be. -- It was developed and operated by Cedar House, a non profit organization comprised of a community of women who are in recovery. Patti explains that the combination of art and planting are all part of the therapeutic process. The staff is very friendly and accommodating. The place will make you smile! (It is a metal building and the entrance is a door on the west side of the building. The front door is a different office.) Open Saturdays 9 am-2 pm and Sundays 10 am-2 pm
