Visit one of the two oldest houses in Amsterdam.
Het Houten Huis (Begijnhof 34) is Amsterdam's oldest house, dating from around 1420. It is one of only two wooden-front houses in the city, as timber houses were banned in 1521 after a series of catastrophic fires. Most of the houses in the Begijnhof were not built until after the 16th century.
The city's oldest house, Het Houten Huis (1420), is located at number 34, the south-wester fringe of the Begijnhof courtyard.

One of the last two original wooden houses in Amsterdam with a special story.
This wooden house on the Zeedijk 1 was built in 1550 and is one of the last two original wooden houses in Amsterdam. In the 17th century many sailors surprised all their money, so they could not pay their bills at the end of their leave. The owner of In 't Aepjen, then an inn, asked one of his customers to take a monkey for him from the tropics, to settle his debt. Other sailors also brought monkeys, until the inn was full of monkeys ... and with fleas. Nowadays there is a café here, which is still called 'In 't Aepjen'.

You will find the Wynand Fockink Proeflokaal (Dutch for tasting tavern) and liquor store in the Pijlsteeg, an alley behind the National Monument on the Dam square in Amsterdam.
In around 1679 Wynand Fockink started a liqueur distillery. Soon a tasting tavern was added, where customers could taste and buy the products. To this day, this practice has continued; here liqueurs and genevers are still being made using the same 17th century traditional craft methods.
Wynand Fockink produces more than 70 Dutch liqueurs and genevers which can be tasted in the authentic 17 century environment.
Tasting the products is done in the old fashioned way of bowing to the drink and slurping the first sip from a traditional tulip glass. Cheers!

In the Foodhallen there are various stands where entrepreneurs sell snacks and drinks that can be enjoyed on the spot. The concept was inspired by ‘indoor food markets’ such as the Torvehallerne in Copenhagen, Mercado de San Miguel in Madrid and the Borough Market in London.

Near the Leidseplein opposite the Heineken Experience is a small piece of Italy called La Storia della Vita. With the high ceilings, the classic decor and the many mirrors, it reminds you of a pallazzo in Tuscany. To enhance the atmosphere and thus also the taste sensation, someone is playing the piano in the background.

Experience even more intensely in the Outdoor Museum that life around the Zuiderzee, some 100 years ago, was not always easy, and least of all for children. During weekends, your holiday or public holidays, try to put yourself in the shoes of a child from 1919. With the father out at sea, at the risk of his life, mother kept things going and the children would give her a hand. Roll up your sleeves in a household of the olden days and find out how you can get your hands dirty.

Edam, town of cheese.
The city itself is a conservation area and it is wonderful to stroll along the canals (called harbours), the streets and wondering old fronts dating from mostly the 17th and 18th century.
Just outside the city centre you can visit Fort Edam, part of the Defence Line of Amsterdam, with spectacular views on both the wetlands and the former Zuiderzee. From here you are nearby the Beemster Polder, dating from the 17th century, am exceptional example of reclaimed land in the Netherlands. Fort Edam and Beemster Polder are listed as Unesco World Heritage.
The neat city centre of Edam offers you classy shops, cafe terraces with a lot of atmosphere and a wide range of sights such as the Great Church (in its form the biggest in the Europe) with its stained glass windows, the cheese weigh-house and the museum.
Edam is known around the world for its cheese. In July and August you can visit on Wednesday the world famous cheese market.
After this impressive hustle and bustle you can easely slide in one of the best kept secrets: the calm in less than an hour from the capital city Amsterdam.
