Rent a car if you can
Island is small but the main source of transportation is taxi. There are some buses but these are only really useful for hotel to airport travel.
You can get by using only taxis but a few trips of taxi is the same price if not more than renting small car.

You will find them throughout the island do not be afraid of them. They are scared of people and will run away from them. Don't be chasing and trying to catch them and you will be fine around them.
