Buurten

On Sundays the city can feel a bit dead. Head over to Kloosterstraat, where you can spend a full day strolling through antique & design shops. Don’t forget to pass by Milad for ice cream and finish the day with drinks at Dansing Chocola or Heilig Huisken.

If you don’t know where to look, you’re going to have a bit of a difficult time to find PAKT. It’s tucked away, hidden from the street, in one of Antwerp’s busier districts. But once you enter through the gates, at the Lamorinièrestraat or at the Green Quarter’s side, you enter an oasis of peace and quiet. PAKT is the sustainable heart of Antwerp’s Green Quarter. The ideal spot to get a locally produced coffee, lunch or dinner in a unique setting, surrounded by breathtaking rooftop gardens.

The secret Vlaeykensgang alley dates from 1591 and connects Oude Koornmarkt and Pelgrimstraat with one another. Walk through the gate at Oude Koornmarkt 16 - right around the corner from the appartment- and you feel as if you have journeyed back in time. I highly recommend passing by Tazu for excellent Japanese inspired cocktails in a cosy setting, served by knowledgeable and passionate staff.

Zurenborg is probably Antwerp’s most beautiful neighbourhood, with its elegant streets and stunning Art Nouveau façades. The beating heart of this neighbourhood is its square, Dageraadplaats, which is lined with pubs and restaurants. The lovely starry canopy above the square creates the perfect atmosphere. Have a drink at cafe Zeezicht and eat some Thai food at Overzee. Bring your cargo bike - it won’t look out of place here. Right around the corner you can find ‘draakplaats’, where antwerps most famous lgbtq+ bar ‘Den Draak’ is located. If you are looking for a place to eat, head over to Yalla Yalla for a Middle Eastern feast.

Walk inside the printing office and house of the Plantin-Moretus family as if you were a friend of theirs visiting 400 years ago and learn everything about the history of book printing. This might be my favorite museum in Antwerp and it’s at walking distance from the appartement, located on the cosy Vrijdagmarkt.

For the best panoramic view of the city, you need to cross the river. You could do this by boat, but many locals still prefer the iconic underpass or ‘voetgangerstunnel’ and its wooden escalators, dating all the way from 1933. The entrance to the tunnel is at a 5 minute walk from the appartment

A bit out of the city centre, but a great way to spend a sunny day away from the crowds. In 1950, the city of Antwerp organized a successful international open-air sculpture exhibition in Middelheim Park. As a result, the expansive park became a permanent venue for creative beauty in the form of sculptures. After 50 years of collecting, the park now prides itself with an impressive collection of modern sculptures. Entrance is free of charge.
