Docton Mill (near Hartland) – wonderful tea room and gardens (April-October). One of our favourite walks is nearby to Speke’s Mill Mouth waterfall, either from Docton Mill (a short flat 20 min walk each way) or park at Hartland Quay and walk over the top, down to the Speke’s waterfall and onto Docton Mill (hilly walk of around 1 hour each way)

Walks

The Valley of Rocks, a stunning dry valley with a cliff top path tracing along the coastline, approximately one kilometre west of the villages of Lynton and Lynmouth. Renowned for its beautiful sea views and rugged landscape (and wild goats!). It has a truly beautiful and dramatic landscape, with various walking options, from a 20 minute circular walk along the cliff top path, to a longer steeper walk to a little cove, to a few miles down a path through the valley to a small beach and then back again to the car park. There’s also the option to park in the sweet villages of Lython or Lynmouth, which are connected by a funicular railway. You can join the coastal path part way up the hill that links these villages and walk about 15 mins to the Valley of the Rocks, joining the cliff top coastal path and do the circular walk before heading back to Lynton or Lynmouth (depending if you go up or down the hill when you return). We’d recommend parking in Lynton, enjoying the little shops and cafes, walking part way down the hill by the church, joining the coastal path, doing the loop around the Valley of the Rocks, walking back and then rejoining the path and heading down the hill to explore Lynmouth, on the water’s edge, with more pubs and shops, and then ending with a trip on the funicular railway back up the hill to Lynton. Valley of the Rocks is about a 30 minute drive from the cottage and there is a car park and excellent cafe. There is also parking in Lynmouth and Lynton, which has a small cinema in one of its historic buildings.

The Northam Burrows walk is a must-do for outdoor enthusiasts, especially those who love beach walks. There are options from the full 6 mile walk starting in Appledore, through Northam, around the Burrows, and along the coast back to Appledore. You can also park at Northam Burrows, entering the car park via a little toll road and then walk along the beach and burrows starting at the cafe, along the beach to Westward Ho! with its shops and cafes, before heading back on the beach or along a path - probably around a mile each way. There’s lots of wildlife including birds and sheep, with lovely views of Instow, Westward Ho!, and Appledore from Crow Point. It has natural beauty and local charm and is pretty flat and easy with a huge dog friendly beach.
