Glasgow Botanic Gardens is located in the heart of the city’s West End by the River Kelvin and contains a variety of plant collections, woodland copses and riverside walks as well as the famous Kibble Palace. Kibble Palace is a magnificent glasshouse designed by John Kibble and houses the national collection of tree ferns. Plants from tropical rainforests grow in the palm house. The Botanic Gardens Tearoom is the latest addition to the gardens and can be found in the former curator’s house near Kibble Palace. There is also a children’s play area within the gardens.

Comprising of 9000 objects the opening of the specially built Burrell Collection in in 1983 served as a catalyst for the rejuvenation of Glasgow as a major cultural city. The remarkable Collection holds treasures from all over the world including pottery and porcelain produced in China over a 5,000-year period making it one of the most significant collections of Chinese art in the UK, paintings by renowned French artists including Manet, Cézanne and over 20 paintings by Degas and medieval treasures including stained glass, arms and armour and over 200 tapestries which rank amongst the finest tapestries anywhere in the world. The building itself was awarded A-listed status by Historic Scotland in February 2013 in recognition of its position as one of the country’s finest examples of 1970s architectural design. The Burrell Collection is currently undergoing a refurbishment.* *The Burrell Collection is currently closed for refurbishment - please visit glasgowlife.org.uk for details. In the meantime, visitors can still enjoy this unique collection with changing displays at Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum. During the refurbishment, Burrell at Kelvingrove will give visitors an insight into treasures from the Burrell Collection, and an opportunity to help shape the redisplay of the collection and visitor facilities at the Burrell. Kelvingrove Art Gallery & Museum is situated on the edge of Kelvingrove Park, in the heart of Glasgow’s West End, approximately a 20 minute walk from the city centre.
