In the Oltrarno area, south of the river, the trendy Santo Spirito district offers a lively nightlife. The bars overlooking the Piazza Santo Spirito attract the young inhabitants of the area, where there are chic restaurants and informal trattorias. Craft shops sell shoes and costume jewelery, while numerous antique shops overlook Via Maggio. Alongside the Pitti Palace's collection of masterpieces, the Boboli Gardens offers statues and fountains.

On hot days, residents equip themselves with umbrellas and deck chairs to soak up the sun along a stretch of the river bank. Close to the hills there are elegant and exclusive villas. The Bardini garden is crossed by a path that reaches the seventeenth-century villa of the same name which enjoys a view of the city and is home to two museums.
