If you want a taste of how Walthamstow used to be, before middle class gentrification began, take a walk up the stairs to The Victoria, which has barely changed in decades. The karaoke nights on Fridays are always entertaining. They also host some bands and drag shows.

If you like gin, this is your place. There's gin, gin, gin, sloe gin, damson gin, speciality gin, jenever (traditional Dutch gin) and excellent gin cocktails. And there's gin.

A friendly place serving a wide variety of home-cooked food at very reasonable prices. And it's on the route home from the station. They now also run the cafe by the playground in the park

Very tasty sour dough pizzas and reasonably priced drinks with a minimalist hipster vibe, tucked down a cobbled alleyway, around the corner from "Mirth" - the cinema turned bar. Can get busy at peak times, so worth booking ahead if you want your own table. There are shared tables too.

Voted one of the top 50 Vegetarian restaurants in Britain and for good reason. But it's actually an all-day cafe that opens into the evenings Thursday to Saturday. There's a garden out the back and an extra indoor eating area.

t's not haute cuisine, but the food is always fresh, cheap and free of MSG. And the wine's not bad and there's jazz music!

I kind of hate Tesco, although it is the closest supermarket. But you'll probably find better prices and produce in the many local Turkish grocery stores.

I love this place. Lots of fresh produce and general necessities, plus a Turkish bakery and all at good prices. And always open until the early hours for those munchies on the way home from a night out.
