Grocery: Canyon Foods Laundromat: Next to Canyon Foods Post Office: Next to Canyon Foods Restaurants: Huckleberry Patch, Elkhorn Grill, Willows Huckleberry Land Coffee: Hungry Horse Espresso History: The town of Hungry Horse, has a name as charming as the timbered high country in which it is located. Just 9 miles from the west entrance of Glacier National Park and 44 miles from the Canadian border, Hungry Horse knows the kind of winters that fur trappers experienced in the region in the early 1800s. When the snow flies in Montana, it can be a dangerous situation for man or beast, including horses. That’s what happened to Jerry and Tex, two freight horses working the Montana oil rush in the winter of 1900-01. They wandered away and weren’t found until a month later, belly-deep in snow and skinny as lodgepole pines. Nursed back to health, Jerry later pulled a fire wagon in Kalispell, and Tex did the same for a mercantile company. And so the name Hungry Horse stuck.

Sightseeing

In 1953, Hungry Horse Dam was completed on the South Fork of the Flathead River, in a scenic spot surrounded by more than 25 mountain peaks. The dam took five years to build as construction shut down every winter, and crews labored to clear thousands of trees from the site, a job accomplished by chaining a huge, 4½-ton steel ball to a couple of tractors and pulling it through dead timber and over stumps left by loggers. One contractor built an iron drag shaped like an umbrella to gather the timber into a pile for burning. When Hungry Horse Reservoir inundated a fire lookout tower, the Bureau of Reclamation rebuilt it elsewhere, along with U.S. Forest Service roads, bridges, and buildings. At 564 feet high, Hungry Horse is one of the largest concrete arch dams in the United States, and its morning-glory spillway, with water cascading over the rim and dropping 490 feet, is the highest in the world. Hungry Horse was built not for irrigation, as were so many other Reclamation dams, but to provide water storage that could be used to increase hydroelectric power production at Grand Coulee and Bonneville dams, downstream on the Columbia River. Hungry Horse, its reservoir, and the four generators in its powerplant (which produce about one billion kilowatt hours of power a year) also provide flood control and electricity to the surrounding area, including the towns of Kalispell, Whitefish, and Columbia Falls.

Logan Pass is at the summit of the Continental Divide and the top of the Going to the Sun Road. Beginning from the Logan Pass visitor center, a moderate hike will take you to Hidden Lake (1.5 miles to the overlook of the lake, significantly more effort will take you to the lakeshore). The trail provides fantastic views of some of the higher peaks in the park and along the way you're bound to run into some mountain goats.

This one- way hike begins at the top of Logan Pass and ends at "the loop" which is halfway to Logan Pass on the Going to the Sun Road. Groups will have to take two cars, leaving one at the loop on the way up to the pass, or use the hiker shuttle. This 11 mile hike follows the Garden Wall (a ridgeline on the West side of the Continental Divide) and provides some of the best views of the park. The Granite Park Chalet, built in the 1920's (accessible only by this hike), lies at the halfway point and is a perfect lunch spot. Make sure to bring binoculars to scope out the meadows for grizzlies.

The hike to Grinnell Lake begins from the shoreline at the south end of the Many Glacier Hotel. However, you can shave 5 miles off your roundtrip hike by taking the two shuttle boats across Swiftcurrent Lake and Lake Josephine. The following description for this hike to Grinnell Lake begins from the boat dock at the Many Glacier Hotel. Please note that there is a fee to ride the two shuttles. The express boat shuttles hikers across Swiftcurrent Lake in about 8 minutes. From the landing on the south side of the lake you’ll take the paved trail over to Lake Josephine. This short 0.2-mile walk climbs about 80 feet before descending back down to the lake. From here you’ll board the Morning Eagle and take the 12-minute shuttle across Lake Josephine. From the boat landing on the south end of Lake Josephine, hikers should take the trail that leads towards the right. In a very short distance you’ll reach the junction with the Grinnell Glacier Trail. Continue going straight here to reach Grinnell Lake. Depending on the angle of the sun, the lake has an emerald, or opaque turquoise appearance, the result of glacial silt being transported down from Grinnell Glacier.

Roughly 0.4 miles from the boat landing you’ll reach another trail that branches off to the right. This trail hooks up with the North Shore Lake Josephine Trail in a short distance, and takes hikers back to the Grinnell Glacier Trailhead in Many Glacier. To continue on towards Grinnell Glacier, turn left here. Roughly 3.6 miles from the boat landing hikers will finally reach the Grinnell Glacier Overlook where you’ll have commanding views of the 152-acre glacier, Upper Grinnell Lake, the Garden Wall (and Continental Divide), as well as 9553-foot Mt. The Hexagon is unique to the Montana Vortex and was discovered in 2005. The growth pattern of the trees, one twisted and the rest growing in a half-circle, gave away a hexagon of small energy nodes on which we’ve placed stepping stones. The stones have all been leveled with a laser. From two to six people stand on stones opposite each other and as they move from stone to stone they can see each other shrink and grow. It’s an interactive experience that boggles the mind.
